The Apple iPhone 5 may or may not be released pretty soon but it has caused much excitement because of several improvements in terms of performance and features and perhaps even a larger screen. There is one rumor, however, making the rounds that is causing some discomfort among existing customers and even those who offer products with iPod and iPhone compatibility. The dock connector that is universal to all Apple devices, which has been a 30-pin connection until now is likely to be changed into a 19-pin connector starting with the new iPhone. This change might cause discomfort to the Apple fan base that has been accustomed to
the regular 30-pin connector. Such a change might mean that the accessories will no longer be compatible.

According to sources who wish to remain anonymous, Apple has gone for a smaller connector to make room for a headphone jack on the bottom of the device. While this might not be good news for those who own Apple accessories, it is a great opportunity for developers who can think of innovative new accessories with the new connector. Moreover, they can be confident about the compatibility with future Apple devices as the company has maintained the dock connector standard with its entire line up so far.

The possibility that the iPhone dock might change has sparked mixed reviews from analysts. On one hand, people are of the opinion that the new dock will not stop customers from buying the phone. Others have issued a word of caution to Apple to think again before severing ties with an existing accessory. Recent surveys have shown that 14% of potential customers are highly likely to buy the new iPhone while 17% are somewhat likely. In fact, the overall demand for the new iPhone is expected to be much higher than what it was for the iPhone 4S.

The overall sales of smart phones are expected to rise this fall and as usual, Apple is going to get a large chunk out of it, the only other beneficiary being Samsung, as the increased demand will in all likelihood be focused on these two companies only. The new iPhone is expected to sport a 16:9 aspect ratio 4” display, which is a size up from the 3.5” that were available on all iPhones till now. In addition, it is expected to boast of Near Field Communication among many other features to compete with the recently launched Galaxy SIII.
