motomakerGoogle owns Motorola now and the company has finally developed a smartphone with decent specs and one that can be customized via colored battery covers.  The Moto Maker, as Motorola calls it, is a program that you can use on the web, in order to customize your smartphone before it gets shipped to you.  The Moto X is the smartphone that you are customizing and according to sources, consumers will have to get a coupon at a local retail store so they can go online and customize their phones.  The customizations include requesting specific color options for the back plate, front color, side trim and the color of the buttons.

When the Moto X was first announced, the Moto Maker was not going to be available at the same time, so it is nice to see that Motorola and AT&T have everything worked out in that department.  The Moto X can be purchased in retail stores if you want either the black or the white models.  Any and all other color options are going to have to be done through the Moto Maker web program.  Besides being able to customize the colors on the outside, Google is giving customers the choice to customize some of the software as well.

Custom software includes personalized wallpaper and the addition of your Google ID, so you do not have to add that the first time you power up your phone.  News following around the launch of the Moto X indicated that the smartphone is gaining in popularity partly because it is one smartphone that is fully assembled in the United States.  Motorola has a plant in Fort Worth, Texas and that is where the new smartphone is made.  The custom smartphone was initially told to be shipping within 4 days of the order, but now that demand has surged for the device, Motorola has become more conservative about shipping estimates.

AT&T customers are the first to be able to customize their smartphone and according to reports, AT&T is not the last.  Verizon Wireless has confirmed that after the Moto X sells a little on the AT&T network, it will then start to sell the device.  Other than being able to customize colors and wallpaper, the Moto X also allowed for in scripted information on the case, but that was put on hold due to quality complaints.
