This year’s IDEA competition, which is known as the Oscars of industrial design awards, saw the HTC Windows Phone 8X praised as a top-level smartphone.

The HTC 8X 4G Windows Phone Black is available for a reduced sale price now starting at $49.99.

The Windows Phone 8X beat out other popular smartphones like the Motorola Razr HD and Razr MAXX HD, the LG Optimus G and Optimus G Pro, the BlackBerry Z10 and the Asus Padfone Infinity in the Communications Tool category. Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer HTC was lauded for the “beauty of the Windows Phone 8 operating system,” the physical design and the interface on the Windows Phone 8X, stating that it works in harmony with its user.

The Windows Phone 8X arrived in November of last year in the United States, and is currently priced at around $49 with a standard two-year contract online. HTC has included the sound enhancing Beats Audio, found for the first time on a Windows Phone, which boosts your audio signal with unique audio amplifiers through both the handset’s 3.5 mm audio jack and speaker. Delivering 4G LTE connectivity and speeds, the phone weighs just 4.59 ounces (130 g), light for a 4G smartphone.

The Windows Phone 8X by HTC is also slim at 0.40 inches (10.1 mm), and the Super LCD 2 display runs 4.30 inches in size. That True HD screen offers a high-end pixel density at 342 pixels per inch, with resolution running 720 by 1,280 pixels overall. A full 16 million colors are used to produce visual displays, and a scratch resistant layer of Gorilla Glass 2 protects against accidental dings and drops. The phone can also deliver up to 15.0 hours of talk time after a full battery charge, nearly twice the industry average.

The rear facing 8.0 megapixel camera joins a front facing chat cam in the Windows Phone 8X camera combo, and that rear shooter records video in 1,080P HD resolution. Both front and rear cameras offer extra-wide 88 degree capture. A dual core 1.5 GHz CPU powers the phone, which also delivers 1.0 GB of RAM system memory and 16 GB of built-in storage space. For web surfers, the Internet Explorer 10 browser is on board, as well as support for Facebook, YouTube, Picasa and Twitter.

The HTC 8X 4G Windows Phone Black can be purchased at a discounted price tag now starting at $49.99.
