Since Sprint released the original HTC EVO 4G, the handset has gone on to become one of the best handsets in the Android lineup of the wireless provider. However, the handset could very well be on its way out already because its successor, the HTC EVO 4G LTE, has already been announced by the wireless carrier. Sad to say, there has been no official word coming from Sprint as of yet as to when our smartphone-crazed brethren can expect the HTC EVO 4G LTE to grace the shelves of the wireless provider.

The addition of the HTC EVO 4G LTE to the lineup of Android-powered smartphones of Sprint was announced by the carrier earlier this month. In addition to that, Sprint has confirmed that pre-orders for the handset will start on May 7 but the carrier neglected to mention the date we can expect the HTC EVO 4G LTE to become available for public consumption. Last week however, there was a rumor that circulated that the pegged date for the handset to hit the shelves of Sprint is supposed to be on May 18. Today, an anonymous source from Sprint has confirmed that the HTC EVO 4G LTE will indeed make its debut in the shelves on the said date. And apparently, this debut will not only be in brick and mortar stores of the carrier but the handset is also set to become available online on May 18.

And to give credence to the source of these rumors, the source for the apparent May 18 release date of the HTC EVO 4G LTE is the same source that whispered to our ears about the April 22 launch date of the Sprint version of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus so this information could very well turn out to be more than just a rumor. Until we see the HTC EVO 4G LTE becoming available on May 18 though, take this information with a grain of salt is all I can say. And while we wait for the HTC EVO 4G LTE to finally make it to the shelves of Sprint, we have the specs sheet of the handset to give you an idea as to what components and capabilities it brings to the table.

The HTC EVO 4G LTE is your typical Android smartphone with a black-slab design and its chassis measures 134.8 x 68.9 x 8.9 mm while its catch weight is pegged at 134 grams. It will ship with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich for its operating system and a dual-core Krait processor clocked at 1.5 GHz is complemented by a full gigabyte of RAM in delivering the computing power requirements of the handset. It has 16GB of internal memory which can still be expanded by using the microSD card slot of the handset while its display measures 4.7 inches and is of the Super IPS LCD2 variety. The display itself is made from Gorilla Glass while its resolution comes up to 1280 x 720 pixels. The shooting department of the HTC EVO 4G LTE is equally impressive with its rear 8MP autofocus camera with LED flash and a 1.3MP front-facer.
