As of the moment, most of the handsets currently available in the market today are waiting for their chance to get a taste of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, the version of the Google mobile operating system unveiled a couple of months back at Google I/O. Several high-end devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S III and the HTC One X have already gone ahead and gotten a taste of this version of the Android OS while several other handsets are already in the pipeline to get the Android 4.1 refresh.

However, there are those handsets which are still stuck in the Gingerbread generation and are awaiting for their turn to get cranked up to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, the precursor of Jelly Bean. Now this is a sad sight to see because ICS is said to be a big bump from Gingerbread and brings a lot of goodies and treats to the table. But if you happen to be still holding on to that LG Optimus 2X of yours from yesteryears, you can now say goodbye to Gingerbread and say hello to ICS.

Looking back, the LG Optimus 2X, the world’s first smartphone to come with a dual-core processor under the hood, has had a rough journey to getting upgraded to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Back then, it was rumored that the planned upgrade to ICS for the handset was canceled. Later on, LG backtracked and said that it is still all systems go for the update. Then, news came out that the update will be delayed. Finally, the update was released but only to LG Optimus 2X handsets in Korea followed by the release of the update’s source code a couple of months back.

Now, all of this culminates to the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich for the LG Optimus 2X finally getting rolled out to handsets outside Korea which means that an international rollout is already in the offing for the LG smartphone. According to new reports, the v30a firmware for the LG Optimus 2X which is based on Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich can now be taken advantage of and downloaded via the PC update utility of LG. With this development, LG Optimus 2X users all over the place can now give their handsets that long-awaited upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and start enjoying ICS-specific goodies such as the latest Google apps, new version of Gmail, Google Calendar and a whole lot more. The update is also rumor to come with Optimus UI 3.0, the company’s custom user interface.

As for the LG Optimus 2X, the handset boasts of an NVIDIA Tegra 2 Ap20H chipset under the hood which comes with a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor clocked at 1 GHz and 512MB of RAM. The handset comes with 8GB of onboard storage which can further be expanded using the device’s dedicated microSD card slot. In terms of its display, the LG Optimus 2X comes with a 4.0-inch IPS LCD panel with a 480 x 800 resolution while its camera department boasts of a main 8MP shooter at its back panel while its front bezel is home to the handset’s 1.3MP video call and self-portrait snapper.
