galaxysiiisprintSamsung announced a couple of weeks ago that their best-selling Galaxy S III smartphone has sold more than 40 million units worldwide since its release in the middle of last year. That is almost the total of Galaxy S II smartphones sold in the full 2 years it has been available. The handset is so popular that it was the first phone to outsell an iPhone while both the Galaxy S III and the iPhone 4S were available from the same wireless carriers in the 3rd quarter of 2012.

The Galaxy S III certainly does not need to be discounted to register sales, but nonetheless, Amazon Wireless is currently offering the 16 GB Sprint Galaxy S III at the nearly free price of one penny on contract. No word if this is a time sensitive sale, but compared to the price of $69 on contract at Verizon it certainly appears to be quite a bargain. The 16 GB Sprint Galaxy S III 4G smartphone runs on the new Sprint 4G LTE system in the United States.

Slim and light considering the size of the display and the hardware on board, the Sprint Galaxy S III 4G weighs 4.70 ounces (133 g), and measures 5.38 x 2.78 x 0.34 inches (136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6 mm). That large display measures 4.80 inches, with the Super AMOLED screen delivering 306 pixels per inch. Overall screen resolution is 720 x 1,280 pixels, with more than 16 million separate colors present. Talk time runs above average for a 4G smartphone at 9.20 hours after a battery charge.

For the social networker popular applications Twitter, Picasa, YouTube and Facebook have been pre-installed, and the Sprint Galaxy S III delivers NFC wireless support out-of-the-box. The Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus MSM8960 microchip package which powers the handset includes a dual core 1.5 GHz CPU and Adreno 225 GPU. Also available in a 32 GB model, the handset comes packed with 2.0 GB of RAM system memory and a microSD slot for storage expansion.

The handset also delivers an 8.0 megapixel camcorder and front facing camera. The chat capable camera can also be used for video calls, and the rear facing camcorder records video at the rate of 30 feet per second, and in 1,920 x 1,080 pixels (1,080p HD resolution). That rear facing snapper contains an LED flash and back illuminated sensor (BSI) for low light camera operation, and includes a special effects package and simultaneous HD video and image recording. The built-in music player on board the Sprint Galaxy S III contains both custom and preset equalizers so music lovers can personalize their audio experience.
