For the first time since it was released almost a year ago, the iPhone 4S has lost its position as the largest selling smartphone in the United States. Its crown was taken by the Samsung Galaxy SIII which has surpassed the iPhone 4S in terms of total sales for the month of August. This data comes from analysts at Canaccord Genuity which checks sales stats and figures from retailers to check how each phone is doing in the market and it appears that the SIII is doing very well indeed.

The Samsung Galaxy S III for Verizon is on sale now starting at 149.99.

The iPhone 4S was first launched on AT&T, Verizon and Sprint and later expanded to other smaller carriers has been the top selling phone since October 2011 when it first released. This is in tune with the performance of the previous iPhones but is nevertheless impressive. The second quarter of 2012 saw a drop in sales for the iPhone, probably because customers are awaiting the release of the newer version of it next month. It is possible that the iPhone dropped its top spot for the same reason as the launch of the iPhone 5 looms near.

It is possible that Apple’s iPhone will regain the top spot once it is unveiled next month but it will definitely have tough competition and might have to make an effort to hold on to it. With the Samsung Galaxy S III 4G LTE doing very well in the market and the fact that Samsung has unveiled new Windows Phone 8 devices and as Nokia is preparing to do the same, the iPhone is sure to come across some stiff competition. Moreover, devices from HTC and other Android companies are also lining up to be released. These might not prove strong competition in the long run for the iPhone but the initial demand might just spread and coupled with the fact that Apple might face shortages of displays due to Sharp’s inability to manufacture them, the California giant just might be in for a tough time.

As Apple and Samsung continue to be in a deadlock in several courtrooms, it was thought that Nokia, BlackBerry and HTC would flourish but that is not happening right now but it might change with the unveiling of WP8 and BlackBerry 10 devices. Moreover, as the SIII takes the top spot, it strengthens the fact that Samsung is the largest smartphone vendor in the world.
