When Samsung first unveiled the Samsung Galaxy Note late last year, we didn’t expect the massive device to become as popular as it is now. In fact, were worried about the chances of the Samsung Galaxy Note making it big in the smartphone competition given the fact that it is sort of a niche device and designed specifically for a certain portion of the population. We were gladly surprised when we found out that the handset was already selling well and a lot of Samsung Galaxy Note users have already managed to get used to the massive screen real estate of the phablet.

The Samsung Galaxy Note is currently available for purchase starting at $199 at select online retailers.

This was totally unexpected. Looking back, the Samsung Galaxy Note is not the first smartphone slash tablet hybrid to hit the shelves. That distinction belongs to the Dell Streak 5 although the Dell device was ill-fated right from the start and only managed to sell a handful of the things. The culprit? An identity crisis that got the Dell Streak 5 wondering if it was an undersized tablet or an oversized phone. The Samsung Galaxy Note didn’t have such issues and in fact, upon hitting the shelves, there was already massive demand for the phablet.

In fact, the Samsung Galaxy Note was not supposed to land in US shores and this much was confirmed during the unveiling of the phablet. It is a good thing that AT&T managed to work with Samsung in bringing the Samsung Galaxy Note to our side of the world. From then on, the phablet became one of the bestsellers among the Android lineup of the carrier.

However, word on the street is that the Samsung Galaxy Note is about to head to retirement because its predecessor is about to make its grand entrance. Rumors intimate that the Samsung Galaxy Note II will be unveiled at the company’s August 15 press event. If this pans out, then most likely the Samsung Galaxy Note will be retired to pave the way for its successor. Not many details are available about the Samsung Galaxy Note II but according to rumors, the chassis of the new device will be thinner and taller enabling Samsung to pack a 5.5-inch display into it. It is also said that the Samsung Galaxy Note II will have a 12MP rear shooter and will run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean out of the box.

As for the Samsung Galaxy Note, it is still a very capable device with its QualComm MSM8660 Snapdragon chipset. This SoC brings into play a dual-core Scorpion processor clocked at 1.5 GHz and a full gigabyte of RAM to generate the computing power needed by the phablet. It has 16GB of internal storage which can further be beefed up using the dedicated memory expansion slot of the device. Its claim to fame however is its massive 5.3-inch SuperAMOLED display with a 1280 x 800 resolution while its camera department is composed  of a rear 8MP camera and a 2MP video call snapper out front.  You can buy the Samsung Galaxy Note starting at $199.
