galaxygearThere are two main reasons that you might see a price cut in the mobile world when you are talking about actually devices.  One is because nobody is buying the product, which is what happened to Microsoft and the first Surface tablet.  The other reason is that you are about to bring the second generation to the market and you want the stale inventory sold before that happens.  One of those things is happening to the Galaxy Gear smartwatch and it is not because nobody is buying the gadget.  Samsung has dropped the price ahead of the anticipated launch of the Galaxy Gear 2.

The Samsung Galaxy S 4 Black Mist is available for a reduced sale price now starting at $49.99 – $599.00.

The Galaxy Gear 2 smartwatch is expected to show up around the same time as the Galaxy S5 smartphone which has been reportedly been penciled in for an April to May release.  If you have been in the market for a smartwatch since they showed up on the market, but did not want to pay the asking price, Samsung has done you a favor.  The new price for the Galaxy Gear smartwatch is $120 lower than the original retail price.  The original price for the Galaxy Gear in the United States was just $300, but now you can get if for just $180.

At this time, the price cut is not being seen in the United States, but typically the international version of the gadgets will get the first dibs on discounts as they move into the United States at a later time.  The Galaxy Gear showed up around the same time that the Galaxy Note 3 did and even though it was not quite as popular as the phablet, the Galaxy Gear did provide enough features to garner some consumer attention.  The reviews were not all that positive at first with most of those that wrote them wished there were more features and reasons to buy one.

Shortly after the Galaxy Gear launched it was updated with some more features along with support for more Samsung devices.  There are two smartwatches on the market right now that are cheaper than the Galaxy Gear and they are the Pebble smartwatch, as well as the Sony Smartwatch 2, both of which are priced at $200 or less.  The Galaxy Gear 2 is expected to be revealed alongside the Galaxy S5 at the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona this month.
