Judging by an announcement that came this week, it appears that Flickr is not dead.  If you are one that thought Flickr was dead, apparently you stopped using the service a long time ago.  In fact, the service is still very much alive and it sure makes uploading and sharing your favorite pictures a lot of fun.  Yesterday, the company announced it was launching an official Android app and a new feature called Photo Session.  The Photo Session feature would allow you to share your Flickr photostream in real-time.  The new Android app comes with 10 optional filters for your photos and allows you to post them to Flickr, Twitter and Facebook with ease.

When you are ready to take a picture, you can adjust settings like flash and shutter focus and once they are taken you can “swipe” through them and tapping them to view in full screen mode.  The app also has a slideshow option so you can show off your filtered images without having to touch the screen to cycle through them.  Flickr posted about the app on the company blog at blog.flickr.net.  In the blog post the company said, “Browsing and navigating has been custom designed for Flickr to make use of maps, tags, and activity around your photos,” going on to say, “You can stay up to date with the latest comments and activity on your photos and take advantage of gorgeous full screen browsing and slideshows.“  The new Android app also has privacy options so that you can choose who sees and can download your images.

The Photo Session feature allows you to share your images, with a small group of people, in real-time.  If you just got back from vacation you could upload all your images and invite your friends to the “Photo Session”.  Now your friends can comment and “ooh and ahhh” all over your new images right as you post them.  Have pictures of the new baby?  What a perfect way to show the entire family without having to send them individually to each person and you can all comment about the new addition right away, bringing the family closer even if they live far apart.

To gain access to the feature all you have to do is select the public photo set or photostream you want to share and invite up to 10 people.  From there you can flip through photos and take about them with your friends at your own pace.
