Facebook recently updated by adding a “timeline” to user profiles.  The idea is that Facebook users can arrange their personal information and images in chronological order so that their friends can see how their lives have changed over the years, or the range of the timeline.  Facebook has mobile apps for Android and iOS, so the next step was to add the update to those.  Facebook updated the Android app first and finally just got the update to the iPhone and the iPad version is coming very soon.  The timeline update wasn’t the only thing to get changed with the newest version of the Facebook app marked as 4.1.

Other websites have reported on the Facebook 4.1 mobile app updates.  With the update, you will notice that Facebook loads faster.  The company also added the “subscribers” and “subscriptions” buttons.  This allows users to subscribe to updates from pages and friends, as well as seeing who is subscribed to them.  Another added feature is the ability to add your new friends to a list as you accept their invite.  Currently, you can accept a friend invitation, but then you have to go through your friends list to find them and put them in a specified group.

The Android app was updated before the iOS app and it might not seem like much, but this is the first time that Facebook has done this since the mobile apps launched.  Apple might have needed to approve some features before release, but the delay also could mean nothing at all.  Facebook currently has more Android mobile app users than iOS mobile app users, so that might have played a bigger part in decided who to update first.  Facebook, Apple or Google have not commented on that fact.

In the mean time, Apple users were only able to use the new features via the mobile web version of Facebook .com.  The new update makes Facebook a more “reactive” experience as notifications are shown in popup windows or slide in windows instead of sending you to another new window.  This makes the Facebook mobile app easier to use and faster at the same time.  The last part of the Timeline feature, called the Timeline Activity Log, isn’t available yet, so that is something to look forward to in the next update.  Because of the user numbers, anytime that Facebook releases and update or new app it will likely make the news.
