Nokia Lumia 920: In today’s smartphone world especially when talking about the Windows Phone platform, there are only two top-tier handsets to choose from – the Nokia Lumia 920 and the HTC Windows Phone 8X (three actually, when you take into consideration the elusive Samsung ATIV S). Both devices are both flagship handsets of their respective manufacturers and prospective buyers are hard-pressed to choose between the two because both devices boast of impressive components under the hood and even more impressive capabilities.

Users of the HTC handset however got the edge because the HTC Windows Phone 8X already got the Portico update ahead of the Nokia Lumia 920. Owners of the Nokia flagship however also got a taste of the update a couple of days later which put the two handsets on equal footing once again. For the uninitiated, the Portico update is expected to bring some bug fixes and performance improvements to the Windows Phone 8 operating system and is designed to take care of bugs such as random restarts and brings features such as keep Wi-Fi alive and SMS call reject.

However, it looks like the update also brought more than its share of bug fixes. In fact, users of the Nokia Lumia 920 who already downloaded and installed the update attest to the fact that the Portico update even brought issues to their Nokia Lumia 920 handsets. According to these users, their handsets had trouble controlling screen brightness after getting the Portico update. Not only that, several users were complaining that the update failed to correct the random resets and freeze-ups on the handset.

One user even complained that after applying the Portico update on his Nokia Lumia 920, his handset locks up after charging it overnight. He got in touch with AT&T and was informed that the carrier has a lot of subscribers calling to report the same issue and we quote, “Just got off the phone with AT&T, my carrier about problems with my Nokia Lumia 920 4G. After the update that came out on the 19th, now when the phone charges overnight, it is dead in the morning. AT&T operator I spoke with has had many callers reporting similar problems, this problem was escalated and they think it is a problem with the update.” Hopefully, Microsoft is already aware of this issue and we expect this to get taken care of ASAP.

As for the Nokia Lumia 920, the handset is still an impressive piece of work despite the issues hampering its performance. The circuitry of the handset is built around its QualComm MSM8960 SnapDragon chipset which brings into play a dual-core Krait processor clocked at 1.5 GHz and a full gigabyte of RAM working together to ensure the smoothness of the handset’s operation. The storage space onboard the device is pegged at 32GB while its display is a 4.5-inch IPS TFT panel made from Gorilla Glass 2 with a resolution of 1280 x 768 pixels. Its camera department on the other hand is composed of a rear 8MP shooter and a front 1.3MP snapper.
