A couple of days back, there were reports that users of the Sprint Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch received a notification regarding the availability of the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update on their respective devices. These were largely unconfirmed reports at that time but today, we can confirm that the carrier has officially started rolling out the ICS update for its variant of the once venerable Samsung flagship device from yesteryears.  The Samsung Galaxy S II Epic Touch 4G is currently being offered starting at one penny from select retailers.

Looking back, there was a time a couple of months ago that rumors intimated that the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch from Sprint could very well be the first carrier-branded smartphone released in US shores to get cranked up to what back then was the latest version of the Android mobile operating system. And when reports about Sprint being in the final stages of testing the ICS update for the handset came out, the speculations became stronger.

Sad to say, this is not to happen because the rumors did not pan out and the HTC Vivid 4G instead became the first handset in our side of the world to get a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich. Users of the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch went back to waiting for the update to land and the months of waiting finally comes to an end today.

As mentioned earlier, the update that will give the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch the jump to Ice Cream Sandwich has now hit the airwaves. Those still rocking the handset can now look out for the notification that will let them know about the update’s availability or barring that, opt to just head on over to Settings > About Phone > Software updates to initiate the manual check for updates. The rollout by the way is staggered so some of you guys will not be as lucky as others and will still have to wait a couple of days more.

The update will bring Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich to the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch and will upgrade the handset’s software version to IMM761.FF18. OF course, all the goodies and treats associated with ICS such as improved multitasking and Face Unlock will also be included in the whole package.

As for the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch, this variant is said to be the best version of the Galaxy S II to reach our side of the world. It has an Exynos chipset under the hood and this SoC brings to the handset a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor clocked at 1.2 GHz and a full gigabyte of RAM. Storage space on the handset is pegged at 16GB but this is still expandable using the microSD card slot of the handset. The claim to fame of the handset is its 4.52-inch SuperAMOLED Plus display with its 480 x 800 resolution while its shooting department is comprised of a rear 8MP shooter and a front 2MP webcam.  Buy the Epic Touch 4G starting at just one penny!

  1. Its beautiful and all but the battery life is abysmal

  2. This update killed my phone my battery dies really fast now and apps are freezing and my phone runs extremely slow now. I also don’t care for the way a page reloads every time you go on the internet. I like the layout of the update but overall the performance of my phone sucks!

  3. This update is horrible. Batter drains 1% every minute or 2 with minimal use. This phone is advertised to get 8.7 hours of talk time running Android 4.0 operating system. That is a complete lie.

if you haven’t received your update notification yet, count your lucky stars. If you are debating whether or not to upgrade to 4.0.4, DON’T. Not until they issues a fix to the battery drain issues.

  4. This update TOTALLY sucks, don’t do it!

  5. Updated my Galaxy S II and am not particularly happy. Web pages do not auto fit the screen even though I have that item checked in my settings. Battery life seems to be considerably less than before and I’m not too crazy about the layout of my e-mail and other apps.

I liked my phone better before the upgrade.
