lumia1520miniJust like new color options have been introduced to smartphone and tablet markets over the last couple years, it looks like there is another design trend that is picking up.  The mini version of higher end smartphones has been popping up from more than one company on the market.  Samsung released the Galaxy line in a mini form and HTC has also done the same thing with its popular “One” smartphone line.  The next in line, according to reports, is Nokia with the Lumia 1520 Mini, which is set to rival the Sony Xperia Z1s.

The idea behind the mini models on the market is that many smartphone users want the power, but they do not want to carry around a phablet that is almost 6-inches in size or a smartphone with a larger than 5-inch display.  The mini models are typically smaller than 5-inches in size, but they pack the same punch that the larger models do.  The Lumia 1520 is going to be a smartphone with a small, 4.3-inch touch screen display, but it will offer a full 1080p HD resolution at the same time.  Hardware on the inside will include 2GB of RAM and a 3000mAh battery for extended daily use.

The camera on the back side of the device is a top notch 14MP PureView model and we all know the software that comes with Nokia to help operate the camera is just as good.  One bad thing about the smaller model is that it will not come with support for a microSD card slot so users will be capped at 32GB of storage, which in most cases is plenty unless you are snapping photos every single day and not moving them to cloud storage.

The original Lumia 1520 comes with a 20MP camera, so you will lose a little resolution there, but it is still the PureView model, so that is a step in the right direction.  There is no indication that the phone will come with a quad-core processor, but if Nokia wants to compete with other “mini” models, the quad-core processor is a must.  It looks like the Nokia Lumia 1520V will be coming to the market sometime in April along with the release of Windows 8.1.  The device could showcased at the Microsoft BUILD conference which is held around the same time in California.
