droidultraVerizon recently announced that the Android 4.4 KitKat update would be rolling out to Motorola Droid Ultra 4G smartphone owners over the next few days. This follows the delivery of KitKat to the Moto X 4G on all four major US carriers, but this is the first KitKat software boost to arrive for carrier-exclusive smartphones. The Droid Ultra was launched alongside the Droid Maxx and Droid Mini smartphones on Verizon, and they are also currently receiving the step up to Android 4.4.

The ultra in the handset’s name applies to the ultra-skinny profile the handset offers as one of the slimmest smartphones ever designed. But it may as well apply to the price tag the Verizon Droid Ultra 4G currently carries when you purchase it from the Amazon Wireless store online. Offered for around $19.99 on contract, the Verizon Droid Ultra will receive the Android 4.4 KitKat update in phases, so do not worry if you do not currently see a notification for the download. When you do receive the 4.4 Android notification, ensure you have a full battery charge before you attempt a software download, as this is a significant software update.

The Motorola Droid Ultra arrived alongside its siblings with a special Motorola X8 computing package, which spreads standard processes across a full eight operating cores. This enables the 1.7 GHz dual core central processor to provide a much smoother and quicker interface for your more important requests. The phone delivers a large 720P True HD touchscreen and substantial RAM memory.

The 2.0 GB of RAM system memory combines with a quad core graphics processor to support fast and fluid game play and video viewing, while the Motorola Droid Ultra natural language processing core teams up with Google Now to allow control in a truly hands-free fashion with your voice. Active Display and Touchless Control are two features which have been lauded by industry analysts and customers alike, helping to conserve battery power, and allowing you to operate your phone with voice commands, even when it is in standby mode.

The slim profile mentioned above measures a scant 0.28 inches (7.18 mm) in thickness, and the phone is also light in weight, weighing in at just 4.83 ounces (137 g). The Kevlar back plate makes for a durable handset, as does the Gorilla Glass scratch protection layer over the display. The Motorola Droid Ultra for Verizon boasts a large True HD screen at 5.0 inches, and delivers a generous 28.0 hours of talk time after a full battery charge. 16 GB of built-in storage is present, with the rear facing snapper providing Full HD 1,080P resolution video recording at a rate of 60 frames per second.
