The Motorola Atrix HD 4G Android smartphone looks more like the Droid Razr and Droid Razr MAXX handsets than it does previous Atrix iterations. Borrowing the Corning Gorilla Glass protected display and Kevlar and aluminum casing from those two handsets, the phone also duplicates the Droid Razr twins’ nano coated insides, offering a layer of splash protection. And in at least one other way, the new Atrix HD 4G running on the AT&T 4G LTE system in the United States copycats an excellent feature Motorola debuted with those two handsets. That is the customizable Smart Actions application which is flying quietly under the radar of smartphone shoppers, but definitely bears description.

The Motorola Atrix HD 4G is on sale now starting at $0.01.

What the Smart Actions application allows you to do with your Atrix HD 4G handset can be described in a couple of lines, but its importance is actually state-of-the-art, and more phones need to copy this feature. Basically, the Smart Actions app allows you to program your phone for dozens of routine tasks. Now, before you think that every phone has a similar app, think again. Smart Actions allows access to internal programs, so you can preset your Atrix HD to automatically turn on Wi-Fi when you arrive home, as well as turning off Bluetooth. The Atrix HD 4G LTE handset understands locations using GPS, and you can also use it to alternately send a “do not disturb” text message to incoming callers after a particular time of day.

These are only a couple of the tasks that this versatile application provides you, but it allows you to truly customize your Atrix HD to your specific actions, preferences and daily schedule. A very handy app that we feel should be on every mobile handset. As far as size the handset is slim compared to other smartphones, once again following in the Droid Razr footsteps. Only 0.33 inches thick, the Atrix HD measures 5.26 x 2.75 x 0.33 inches overall (133.5 x 69.9 x 8.4 mm), weighing in at 4.94 ounces (140 g).

The Atrix HD delivers a 4.50 inch screen with 720 x 1,280 pixel resolution, delivered at a high-end pixel density of 326 pixels per inch. A 1.5 GHz dual core Krait processor joins an Adreno 225 GPU which handles all graphics processing in the Qualcomm MSM8960 Snapdragon microchip package on board the handset, and 1.0 GB of RAM system memory is on board. The handset offers an 8.0 megapixel camcorder on the back of the handset which provides 1,080P HD video recording, and delivers Android’s 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) operating system out-of-the-box.
