Every year there are certain consumer-electronics Expos and trade shows held globally which offer smartphone manufacturers a chance to display their wares. Last week the tour of tech toys hit the German capital of Berlin, as the 2012 edition of the Internationale Funkausstellung (IFA) consumer electronics expo kicked off. Each year the IFA boasts the largest attendance of any annual consumer electronics trade show, and smartphone manufacturer Samsung displayed their popular Galaxy S III Android handset in an array of new colors. Offered in the standard Marble White and Pebble Blue colors, the handset also debuted new Garnet Red, Sapphire Black, Titanium Gray and Amber Brown color choices. Samsung did not announce whether these new colors would arrive on wireless networks and when, but show-goers and industry analysts at IFA were reportedly positively impressed.

The Samsung Galaxy S III for AT&T is on sale now starting at 149.99.

What has not changed is the hardware and software package found in the many Galaxy S III models that has made the handset so popular it reportedly outsold the Apple iPhone last month. For the last 10 years T. Michael Walkley, an analyst at Canaccord Genuity, has made monthly reports disclosing sales figures he receives from dozens of retail and wireless store outlets around the US. Discussing the continued sales support of the Galaxy S III, he recently stated that, “We believe this is the first month since the iPhone 4S launched in October 2011 that it was not the top-selling smartphone in the U.S. market.” He did not release any sales figures, but only commented that sales of the Galaxy S III were strong amid weak sales of iPhones.

The handset delivers one of the largest high resolution screens of any smartphone, Android’s 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) operating system, high resolution video recording and Near Field Communications (NFC) capabilities out-of-the-box. The Samsung TouchWiz UX UI meshes with ICS, and accepts standard multitouch, capacitive gestures. Very thin and light when compared to other smartphones, the ATT Samsung Galaxy S III measures 5.38 x 2.78 x 0.34 inches (136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6 mm) and weighs 4.73 ounces (134 g). The resolution is one of the highest found on any mobile handset, thanks to the extremely high pixel density of 306 pixels per inch. That gives the 4.80 inch Super AMOLED display an overall resolution of 720 x 1,280 pixels. A second generation level of Corning Gorilla Glass 2 overlays the display, providing glare reduction and scratch resistance.

The hardware package on board the high-end Android smartphone centers around a dual core 1.5 GHz central processor, while a separate Adreno 225 GPU focuses exclusively on graphics processing. The handset offers 16 GB of storage built in and a microSD slot which allows for storage expansion, supporting cards up to 64 GB in size. The Samsung Galaxy S III 4G Android handset also delivers a full 2.0 GB of RAM system memory, one of the first handsets to do so. The rear facing 8.0 megapixel camcorder provides video capture at 1,080P HD resolution, and the front facing chat cam offers video call support. That rear camcorder also provides simultaneous high definition video and image capture, and a highly customizable special effects package. Popular online destinations YouTube, Facebook, Picasa and Twitter are pre-installed and ready for use out-of-the-box.
