In today’s smartphone world, carriers usually subsidize handsets so they can offer them to their subscribers at a much cheaper price point compared to its regular price. This comes at a price though at the expense of signing a new two-year contract with the carrier to take advantage of a certain smartphone at its listed price. Of course, it also goes without saying that the said handset will be locked to the wireless carrier which simply means you can’t use a carrier-locked handset with another wireless provider.

In the case of the Nokia Lumia 900 4G from AT&T though, reports are coming in that the wireless provider is now offering a carrier unlock for the handset. If you happen to rock the AT&T version of the Nokia Lumia 900 4G for your mobile weapon of choice, you can now have the phone unlocked by calling AT&T and giving them your handset’s IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) and get the unlock code in return. Once your Nokia Lumia 900 4G is already unlocked, you can already slip in a SIM card from another wireless provider, say for example T-Mobile’s, and take advantage of the Magenta carrier’s unlimited data plan. For those unfamiliar with getting the IMEI, all you have to do is access your handset’s dialer and t*#06#. A word of caution though – to become eligible for the unlock code, you should already be out of contract with AT&T or have paid the ETF (Early Termination Fee).

Should you be eligible, be prepared to spend a lot of time on the phone with AT&T reps because some of them are apparently not to well-versed when it comes to the unlocking process. Hopefully, AT&T will also put up an online form to request a carrier unlock for the Nokia Lumia 900 4G just like what it did with out of contract Apple iPhone handsets in the past. This way, the unlocking process becomes a whole lot easier. But as of the moment, you have no choice but to grab the phone and contend with the customer service representatives of AT&T is you really want that unlock code for your handset.

As for the Nokia Lumia 900 4G, the once flagship device of the Finnish smartphone manufacturer is about to head off to retirement because of the imminent arrival of the Nokia Lumia 920, its successor, to the shelves of AT&T. Despite that, the handset is still a very capable device with its operation powered by its QualComm APQ8055 SnapDragon chipset. This SoC brings into play a 1.4 GHz Scorpion processor and 512 MB of RAM to generate the required computing power for the Nokia Lumia 900 4G’s flawless performance. Storage space on the handset is pegged at 16GB while its display measures 4.3 inches diagonally and is a ClearBlack-powered AMOLED panel with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels. The Nokia Lumia 900 4G also boasts of a dual-shooter configuration that features a main 8MP shooter at its back panel and a front-facing 1.3MP video chat and self-portrait camera.

  1. I have successfully unlocked my AT&T Lumia 900. It took the AT&T rep only a few minutes to provide me the unlock code. As noted in the article, you will need a SIM from another carrier to get to the unlock screen to type the code. Cheers!
