galaxysiiisprintThe Samsung Galaxy S III recently jumped passed the 50 million units sold mark globally. That means it has officially sold more than all Samsung Galaxy S II versions, which have been available for nearly two years. The Galaxy S III has been available for approximately seven months to put that sales success story in perspective. To say that the Galaxy S III has been a huge hit for Samsung and the wireless service providers which offer it is the early candidate for understatement of the year.

The handset offers a large high-resolution screen, simultaneous high definition video and image recording, a powerful and speedy dual core processor and full feature package. And to make it even more attractive, online retailing kingpin Amazon has dropped the price of the 16 GB Sprint Galaxy S III to $0.01 on contract. The retail price adjustment arrives with Valentine’s Day just around the corner, posturing Amazon properly for continued sales of the popular and best-selling Galaxy S III.

The handset landed on the Sprint network on June 21 of last year, arriving in a slim and light form factor. The handset weighs 4.70 ounces (133 g), making it lighter than the typical 4G smartphone with such a large display. Also slim at 0.34 inches (8.6 mm), the Galaxy S III offers a large 4.80 inch Super AMOLED screen. The Jelly Bean 4.1 operating system is on board and meshes with the Samsung TouchWiz UX UI, and the large display on the handset delivers a high-end resolution of 720 x 1,280 pixels. Pixel density is also high, at 306 pixels per inch.

More than 16 million colors can be found on that display, which incorporates light and proximity sensors to help preserve battery power. Above average talk time is delivered from a single battery charge, at 9.20 hours. The rear facing 8.0 megapixel camcorder provides the aforementioned simultaneous HD video and image capture, and joins a front facing chat cam with video call support in the camera combo. The Galaxy S III handset is NFC capable out-of-the-box, both custom and preset equalizers are found on the built-in music player, and popular online destinations YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Picasa have been pre-installed.

Powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus MSM8960 microchip package, the handset contains a dual core 1.5 GHz CPU. A 32 GB model is also available, and the Galaxy S III offers 2.0 GB of RAM memory, as well as a microSD slot for storage expansion. The Galaxy S III 4G Android smartphone for Sprint can also operate as a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot for multiple wireless devices.
