When you take a look at the numbers concerning iPhone sales in the US, an asymmetrical sales arc always become apparent. Initial sales after an iPhone’s launch are always huge and this continues to Q4 during the holiday season where the Apple handset chalks up monster figures. Come Q1 the next year, sales figures stay strong but by Q2, a slight downtrend becomes apparent. Come Q3, sales of the iPhone continue to dip because fanboys of Apple are already holding out and are just waiting for Apple to release the next generation of the device. And the cycle goes on and on and on.

The Samsung Galaxy S III for Sprint is on sale now starting at 99.99.

However, the release of the Samsung Galaxy S III undid all of that and broke the cycle. In fact, Michael Walkley of Canaccord Genuity did channel checks on the four major US wireless providers in the US and came up with the information that the current Samsung flagship device managed to unseat the iPhone as the best selling handset in US shores last Q2. The iPhone though is at a slight disadvantage here because it is not offered by T-Mobile while the Samsung Galaxy S III is available on all four major carriers. What is interesting though is the fact that the Samsung Galaxy S III still managed to end up as the top seller for both Verizon and Sprint last quarter making it the king smartphone for the second quarter of the year.

There is a big chance however that Samsung may not be able to hold on to that title for long. After all, we’ve seen numerous smartphones announced at IFA and this lot could easily give the Samsung flagship a serious run for its money. Equally-capable Windows Phone 8 devices are also slated to hit the market this Q3 but the biggest challenge will come from Apple itself which has already announced that the unveiling of the sixth generation iPhone will happen on September 12. The next gen iPhone is rumored to hit the shelves either in late September or early October where it is expected to grab the title away from Samsung and continue with the cycle we have discussed earlier.

Despite this threat from other handsets, the Samsung Galaxy S III 4G LTE remains as one of the most popular and most capable devices currently available in the market today. It has a QualComm MSM8960 SnapDragon chipset in its internals which gives the Samsung flagship a dual-core Krait processor clocked at 1.5 GHz and a staggering 2GB of RAM under the hood. The handset is available in 16GB and 32GB in terms of storage capacity depending on the carrier while its display is a massive 4.8-inch SuperAMOLED HD panel with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. Its camera department is just as capable with the device packing an 8MP shooter at its back panel while a 1.9MP video call and self-portrait camera can be found in its front bezel.
