Just a couple of weeks ago Samsung Electronics announced third-quarter financials, and it appears that the South Korean tech manufacturing firm is having a banner year. A Samsung spokesman called out phones like the Galaxy S III as deserving credit for the record-breaking sales numbers the company posted. Global versions of the Galaxy S III smartphone such as the Sprint Galaxy S III in the United States helped the company report approximately $7.3 billion in operating profits for Q3 2012. That spokesman also said that all Galaxy S III models helped contribute to roughly 2/3 of that record shattering profit.

The Samsung Galaxy S III is on sale now starting at 99.99.

And according to some sales figures the Galaxy S III in the United States outsold the Apple iPhone 4S temporarily in markets where both phones were offered. That is the first time that any cell phone has outsold an Apple offering since the arrival of the iPhone. Following in the big footsteps of the previously madly successful Galaxy line, the Galaxy S III roared out of the starting gate, selling more than 20 million units globally in its first 100 days of availability. That easily set a new Samsung sales record, and in the 2nd quarter Samsung shipped nearly twice as many smartphones around the world as did Apple (50 million versus 26 million).

That accounts for nearly one third of the entire global smartphone marketplace, where 176 million total smartphones were shipped in Q2 2012. It seems that much of that sales success belongs to Apple’s lawsuit, which a US judge agreed showed that Samsung infringed on Apple copyrights when they made the Galaxy S III. However, a constant barrage of news updates online regarding the lawsuit in the US actually had the reverse effect of what Apple intended. Independent reviewer Localytics showed impressive sales spikes for the Galaxy S III in the United States which corresponded with legal news announcements made regarding the Apple lawsuit.

Sprint recently “accidentally” leaked screenshots showing their Black Friday, November 23 sales price of $49 on contract for their Galaxy S III. As is usually the case, Sprint neither confirmed nor denied the veracity of this point of sale advertising material. The handset has been popular due to a large high-resolution screen and high-end feature set. The 4.80 inch 720 x 1,280 pixel Super AMOLED display is one of the largest found on any smartphone, and the GS III is slim at only 0.34 inches (8.6 mm). The rear facing 8.0 megapixel camcorder provides simultaneous HD image and video capture, recording video in stereo sound and at 1,080P HD resolution. The phone is powered by a 1.5 GHz dual core central processor, and the handset is one of the first in the world to deliver 2.0 GB of RAM system memory.
