Just last week the largest consumer electronics Expo dedicated exclusively to 4G technology, software and hardware took place in Chicago. The most coveted award offered to 4G hardware manufacturers at the 4G World Conference was Best New Mobile Device, and Sprint’s US version of the Samsung Galaxy  S II, the Samsung Epic Touch 4G, took top honors. Samsung also greedily landed two devices in a tie for second place in the voting, The Samsung Galaxy  S II made for T-Mobile and the Galaxy  S II made for the AT&T 4G mobile broadband network ended up with the second place tie.

Following closely on the heels of the clean sweep in the first three spots at 4G World, Reuters yesterday announced that Samsung has leapfrogged Apple as the worldwide leader in smartphone manufacturing. In the third quarter of 2011, Samsung shipped approximately 28 million units worldwide, good for almost 24% of the global market. Apple shipped 17.1 million smartphones (14.6%) in the same period. That number is in no small part due to the three handsets mentioned above, which in less than eight months have recorded 30 million global sales.  Buy the Samsung Epic  Touch 4G starting at only $99.

The Samsung Galaxy  S II was originally released in Asia and Europe as a global world phone, and immediately broke the Samsung sales record set by its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy S. The Galaxy S sold 10 million units in its first seven months of existence, and the Samsung Galaxy  S II took only five months to get to that same number. Sales growth blew up exponentially when the device was released on all major carriers in the US, driving the Galaxy S II to that 30 million global sales number.

The Samsung Epic Touch 4G for the Sprint 4G WiMAX mobile broadband network also trumped a mobile smartphone record already held by Samsung. The Samsung  Infuse  4G was for the longest time the smartphone with the largest display, at 4.5 inches. Stretching that just a tad, the Samsung Epic Touch 4G delivers a 4.52 inch Super AMOLED Plus screen. However, Samsung did a good job of keeping the size manageable, and actually made it smaller and thinner than the Infuse  4G, yet still delivering on a bigger screen. The processor powering the Epic Touch is Samsung’s own Exynos 1.2 GHz processing chip. The Samsung Epic Touch 4G Android smartphone is available exclusively on the Sprint 4G WiMAX mobile broadband network at a retail price of $99 at select Sprint authorized retailers with a two-year activation.
