This year was the dawn of two major Smartphone devices and their parents have always been at war. Yes we are talking about Microsoft and Apple and we are comparing the iPhone 5 to the Windows 8 operating system. The iPhone 5 received mixed reviews from the tech-world while the Windows 8 which is supposed to bring the actual desktop experience to your phone.

The different design and user interface has prompted Apple to keep an eye out for the competition. While Microsoft is looking out quite ambitiously about the Windows 8 and have added their own surface hardware so as to prevent its corruption by Android and Apple.

The iPhone 5 launch didn’t make people drool, it was seen as lacking innovation on the other hand Windows 8 has made radical change that might not make it a customer’s favorite.

The companies need to understand that people love stories, the thrill and the excitement but they are baffled if they have to change their user experience. Microsoft is probably going to suffer in this department because of the radical change in the OS, on the other hand Apple failed to induce proper drama for its customers unlike it did for the iPad.

Big shots like Apple and Microsoft have locked in customers. It is difficult for consumers to look at another product when they are bent on something they trust but loopholes create doubt and make way for competition. The same might happen to the iPhone 5 as it doesn’t actually made people woo but we will only know after it hits the market.

The problem can only be solved through separate chanelling of resources and a company making the best use of its assets available. Like Apple has a brand value for MAC, so changing it radically would cost it of its huge customer base. Instead be good for both it can work on a separate type of technology like the iPad and experiment with it which it is actually doing with the iPad mini going to hit the market soon. So this kind of strategy would be good for both business and innovation.

Windows should not change its OS radically but should instead take baby steps and on the experimental front it has always got the Windows Phone that it can choose to alter and see customer opinions.
