According to Gartner, sales of smart phones have increased by 46.5% during the second quarter of this year, exceeding the feature phone market for the first time in history. Mobile sales throughout the world grew by 3.6% during the second quarter this year. Microsoft has now overtaken BlackBerry, becoming the third biggest smart phone operating system. Mobile sales to end users through the world totaled 435 million units in this year’s second quarter, which marked an increase of 3.6% compared to the same quarter from last year. The sales of smart phones to end users crossed the 225 million units mark, increasing 46.5% from the end of the second quarter of last year. At the same time a total of 210 million feature phone units were sold to end users, declining by 21% from last year.

Samsung was able to maintain its lead at the top of the worldwide smart phone market, with its share of the market reaching 31.7%, an increase of 2% from the second quarter of 2012. Apple, on the other hand, sold 32 million units of its iPhone, the sales increasing by 10.2% from last year. In the mobile operating system market, Microsoft finally managed to overtake BlackBerry, claiming the third place in the market with a market of 3.3%. Android also continued increasing its lead, reining the market with a total share of 79%.

The sales of Nokia’s mobile phones were affected during the second quarter with the decline in feature phone demand in markets throughout the world as well as the competitive smart phone space. Nokia sold a total of 61 million mobile phones, which is a huge decline from the figure of 83 million from a year ago. However, the sales of the company’s Lumia range of smart phones increased by 112.7% in the second quarter because of the increasing portfolio of the devices with the addition of Lumia 720 and 520.

Surprisingly, sales of Lenovo’s smart phones increased by 60.6%, reaching 11 million units. The performance of the company in the second quarter was helped by its increasing smart phone sales, which increased by 144% as compared to the same time last year, lifting it to the fourth place in the smart phone market worldwide. Lenovo still depends heavily on the Chinese market, which accounts for over 95% of its total sales.
