With Verizon in the lead in terms of LTE coverage in US shores, it is only natural for the wireless provider to have a massive handset base of 4G LTE-supporting smartphones so that subscribers of the carrier have more options to choose from. And when talking about these handsets from the midrange spectrum, the LG Spectrum 4G is definitely the crème de la crème among Verizon’s midrangers.

The handset has been around for quite some time now, since January to be exact. And when you come to think of it, the LG Spectrum 4G despite the fact that it is just a midrange device packs the necessary punch under the hood to be able to run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich for its operating system. LG however did not disappoint as it already confirmed that the handset will indeed get upgraded to the latest iteration of the Google mobile operating system.

Sad to say, the specifics as to when the Ice Cream Sandwich update for the LG Spectrum 4G will be unleashed hasn’t been nailed yet so users of the handset are still playing the waiting game for the update to finally land. However, those of our smartphone-crazed brethren who are brave and adventurous can actually make use of a leaked ICS build for the LG Spectrum 4G if they are interested in getting a look and feel of how ICS will actually run on the handset.

In fact, the hardworking fellas in the developer communities are already playing with this leaked ICS build for the handset. But before you go ahead and get your hands dirty, please keep in mind that this leaked ICS ROM for the LG Spectrum 4G is actually an early version of the update and is not quite polished yet, so to speak. In fact, even the bravest among us encountered massive headaches in getting this to work on the handset. Early adopters of the leaked ROM reported that the installation process is a bit painful. There were even reports of missing IMEIs after applying the update. In other cases, their LG Spectrum 4G handsets constantly reboot or crash. These issues are actually kind of expected especially in early versions such as this so we still remain hopeful for the future.

However, LG has been known as a manufacturer that is always delayed in showing its handsets some update love and we hope that this doesn’t happen in the case of the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for the LG Spectrum 4G. To get away from this ugly impression, LG has confirmed that it is already hard at work so that users of the handset won’t have to wait much longer in getting their LG Spectrum 4G handsets a tasty treat of Ice Cream Sandwich for that matter.  Select online retailers are offering the LG Spectrum 4G starting at $19.
