There was a time when the Samsung Galaxy Note along with its successor, the Samsung Galaxy Note II, reigned supreme in the phablet category of the smartphone competition. In fact, there was a time when the word “phablet” became almost synonymous with the massive Samsung device. This is not surprising at all because the original Samsung Galaxy Note was the reason why the term “phablet” was coined – an amalgamation of the words phone and tablet which is the best description for the massive Samsung device.

Because there were no devices that could compete with the Samsung Galaxy Note and its successor in the category, their domination of the phablet market became total. There were a couple of OEMs that tried releasing their versions of the phablet but these did not stand up to the high standards set by the Samsung devices. Take the case of the LG Optimus VU for example – LG’s appropriation of the phablet device did not turn out well because the Optimus View with its queer shape was just no match for the Samsung phablet.

Now, the Samsung Galaxy Note II is still dominating the phablet category of the smartphone competition but HTC is looking to give the Korean electronics giant more than just token competition. The Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer is looking to do this when it unveiled its take on the phablet device – the HTC Droid DNA. Though slightly smaller than the Samsung Galaxy Note II because it has smaller screen real estate set only at 5.0–inches, the HTC phablet still managed to get some following because of its smaller size which a lot of our smartphone-crazed brethren deemed more at home in the front pocket of their pants compared to the Samsung Galaxy Note II.

However, that is not the only good thing going on for the HTC Droid DNA 4G right now. Due to the holidays and in the spirit of giving, Verizon, which released the phablet in US shores has just made the handset more affordable than ever. In fact, Big Red has already given its authorized resellers to slash the price point of the HTC Droid DNA to make it more attractive to the smartphone buying public. Of course, you will still be required to sign a new two-year service agreement with Verizon if you want to take advantage of the HTC Droid DNA at its heavily discounted price.

As for the HTC Droid DNA, the handset has its circuitry built around its QualComm APQ8064 SnapDragon chipset which brings into play a quad-core 1.5 GHz Krait processor and a whopping 2GB of RAM. Storage space onboard the device is pegged at 16GB but this is all you get because the handset doesn’t pack support for memory expansion. As for its display, the HTC Droid DNA comes with a 5.0-inch SuperLCD 3 panel with a 1920 x 1080 resolution while its dual-shooter configuration boasts of a rear 8MP shooter and a front 2.1MP video call and self-portrait camera.
