Back in the day, Nokia was at the forefront of things in the smartphone competition with the success and popularity of the manufacturer’s E-Series line of handsets. However, things ended badly for the Finnish manufacturer when other OEMs such as Apple, HTC, Samsung, Motorola and the like joined the smartphone bandwagon and began flooding the market with their respective devices. Things were from then on went downhill for Nokia which got relegated to the backseat as a mere spectator while the other OEMs had all the fun and of course the profits in the smartphone market.

Nokia however looked to make a comeback and started its bid of becoming relevant again in the smartphone competition by joining software giant Microsoft in a strategic alliance and started manufacturing handsets for the Windows Phone ecosystem. The manufacturer started out by releasing the Nokia Lumia 800 in US shores via AT&T where the handset received a warm welcome from the fanboys of the Windows Phone platform.

The heydays of the Nokia Lumia 800 however are already over but the handset is still alive and kicking, so to speak. In fact, the handset has just received some much-awaited software love from Nokia when it finally got a taste of the Windows Phone 7.8 update (because it was confirmed in the past that the handset will not make it to Windows Phone 8). Though WP 7.8 did not come with most of the features found in WP 8, it still brought with it a lot of goodies such as the 20 themes found in WP 8, the ability to use Bing wallpaper on the lock screen of the handset and the resizable Live Tiles among others.

However, it looks like the update also brought some issues with it. Apparently, several users of the Nokia Lumia 800 are already complaining about the alleged drop in volume strength of the handset after the WP 7.8 update was applied to the handset. A volume level of 15 prior to the update was already loud but post-update, one has to crank it up to level 30 to reach the same loudness. It looks to be an issue with the update though and not the hardware because reflashing Windows 7.5 back to the handset eliminates the volume issue.

Regardless of this, the Nokia Lumia 800 is still an impressive handset and during its time was said to be the handset of choice to use if you want the best Windows phone experience ever. Under the hood, the operation of the handset was powered by a QualComm MSM8255 SnapDragon chipset which came with a 1.4 GHz Scorpion processor and 512MB of RAM. Storage space on the handset came up to 16GB although the Nokia Lumia 800 did not support memory expansion. Display-wise, the Nokia Lumia 800 sported a 3.7-inch AMOLED panel with a 480 x 800 resolution while its camera department boasted of a rear 8MP shooter which was also capable of capturing 720p clips at 30 frames per second.
