xperiatabletzWhile size zero models may now be discouraged in fashion, a size zero piece of technology is always welcome. And that is why most tech critics are accepting Sony’s new Xperia Tablet Z with open arms. Just a short while after the reveal of its Xperia Z smartphone, Sony announced the new tablet on Monday and has people’s jaws on the floor with the long list of specifications – a list that has been marvelously imbibed into the slenderest of devices.

The tablet comes equipped with 32 GB storage, NFC, Qualcomm 1.5 GHz quad-core processor, 8.1 megapixel camera with Exmore R technology, LTE, 2GB internal RAM, 6000mAh battery and 1920×1200 resolution full HD screen in a 10.1 inch suave body. Connectivity alternatives include usual suspects like 2G, 3G, Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi and microUSB. Finally, there is Sony’s signature S-force virtual surround sound that delivers matchless perfect audio quality. Phew!

The best thing about the upcoming tablet is that it packs this repertoire of specifications in what is arguably the thinnest hardware in the market. With a thickness of 6.9mm and weight of 495g, the Xperia Tablet Z is thinner and lighter than the iPad Mini and possibly every other tablet in the market. It is powered by Android’s latest version, the 4.1 Jelly Bean and, interestingly enough, the device is dust and waterproof! Sony has also previously expressed an inclination towards waterproof phones, while other tech producers seem to be discarding this feature as unimportant.

Sony’s new super-slim tablet is expected to go on sale in Japan in spring this year. Release dates for other markets and pricing haven’t been revealed yet. However, it would be reasonable to expect premium pricing. The tablet will be available in black and white options. There are many hopes attached to the Xperia Tablet Z. This tablet is a momentous progression for Sony as its Tegra-3 based predecessor, the Xperia S, had to be discontinued abruptly due to an incorrigible defect.

Sony’s first tablet, the Xperia P, also failed to make a good impression in the industry. The Japanese tech giant has a lot riding on the Xperia Tablet, as it struggles to regain a significant global market share in telephony. As per some industry rumors, the announcement of the worldwide release date and official global launch is scheduled for the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this February.
