smartphonevalentinesGuys, have you ever thought about using your smartphone as a wingman to help you with the ladies? And women, did you know there are smartphone applications which can help you in your search for Mister Right? Smartphone applications have totally changed the way we use our handsets and live our mobile life, and in the amorous tradition of Valentine’s Day, they are even setting blind dates and matchmaking with the popular pink and red colored annual celebration of love right around the corner.

And before you think that only desperate men and women are using smartphone applications to lineup dates, think again. The use of smartphone apps for dating purposes has been on a meteoric rise as social networking has taken a dominant place in the lives of many busy mobile handset owners. Think about it. We all have Facebook friends whom we have never met, we Tweet on Twitter with total strangers, and the recent Manti Te’o “fake girlfriend” hoax perpetrated on the Notre Dame college football linebacker is proof of how far an anonymous Web-powered relationship can go.

Recently, romance-hopeful Adele Ernsberger decided to go on a blind date as her thoughts turned to the romantic Valentine’s Day which is rapidly approaching. Most professional business women in their 20s would probably turn to a friend or family member for help in setting up a date with someone they have never seen before. But instead of meeting “a friend of a friend” recommended to be perfect for her, she used the application Crazy Blind Date released by the dating service OkCupid.

The application works by a user referring a location for a blind date, and Ernsberger mentioned a bar she knew would be crowded, but also one she did not normally frequent. A man saw her proposal on the relationship website, he agreed to meet her there, a time was set, and the date was on. She knew absolutely nothing about her match before meeting him there, and the application did not even show his photograph. Ms. Ernsberger, 28, explained that she showed up, they had a great time, and a second date was quickly set.

There are plenty of dating applications, with Tinder, Moonit, The Game and Crazy Blind Date ranking as some of the most popular. These applications attempt to replace the lengthy and intensive vetting process before a date is scheduled between two potentially interested parties, and move straight to the face-to-face meeting, powered by your smartphone. Love is in the air this time every year, and if you are brave enough, your Android or iOS powered smartphone just might attract Cupid’s arrow this Valentine’s Day.
