Samsung Galaxy S4 Gets Lower Price, Will Receive Official Jelly Bean 4.3 OS Update in October

gs4At a recent UnPacked event, news was delivered that the Samsung Galaxy S4 would receive a bump up to the Android Jelly Bean 4.3 operating system in October. The rollout of the Android update will be dependent upon your carrier, and no specific date in October was announced as a launch. The Galaxy S4 running on the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE system in the United States recently underwent a price drop, and currently stands at around $119 on contract available at select online retailers.

The phone has been one of the bestsellers of 2013, thanks to an excellent hardware and software package, hands-free and voice-free gesture control, and eyeball tracking technology. The GS4 also offers NFC, Bluetooth 4.0, Wireless-N Wi-Fi and DLNA wireless connectivity options, and the onboard infrared sensor allows you to use your Galaxy S4 as a remote control for your HDTV and home theater system. Samsung debuts their Smart Pause feature on the Galaxy S4, which pauses a video when you look away from the screen, and picking up playback right where you left off when you look back at the display.

As much as 17.0 hours of talk time can be squeezed out of a single battery charge, and the handset is slim at 0.31 inches (7.9 mm). Also exceptionally light for a phone with such a large display, the Galaxy S4 weighs just 4.59 ounces (130 g). The large 5.0 inch screen boasts one of the highest pixel densities of any phone with 441 color pixels located over each inch of display space. The Full HD screen offers a resolution of 1,080 x 1,920 pixels, and is protected against everyday wear and tear with a layer of Gorilla Glass 3.

The powerful quad core central processor running the show on the Galaxy S4 is a Snapdragon 600 model, clocked at 1.9 GHz. An Adreno 320 GPU is also on board, as is 2.0 GB of RAM memory and a microSD slot that supports external cards up to 64 GB in size. On the back of the handset is a 13.0 megapixel camcorder, which provides a unique dual video call feature when used in tandem with the front facing 2.0 megapixel chat cam.

That application is appropriately called Dual Video Call, allowing you to make and receive a video call while showing whoever is on the call just what you are recording. The rear snapper also includes 12 preset shooting modes, and comes equipped with a built-in LED flash and back illuminated sensor (BSI) for low light operation. Face and smile detection, a high dynamic range mode (HDR) and extra-wide panorama mode are also built-in, and an extensive customization and special effects package provide for extreme personalization. Video is recorded in 1,080P HD and at the rate of 30 frames per second.
