Back in the day when the HTC One X was the only quad-core powered handset in the market, the flagship device of Taiwanese smartphone and tablet manufacturer HTC had the spotlight to itself. However, the entry of the Samsung Galaxy S III in the smartphone competition has leveled the playing field in the quad-core category.

The Samsung Galaxy S III is the current flagship device of Samsung and is the successor to the Samsung Galaxy S II, another superphone considered by many of our smartphone-crazed brethren as THE best handset in the market during its heydays. The entry of the Samsung Galaxy S III in the smartphone competition however effectively sealed the fate of its predecessor and confined it to retirement.

Not that we are complaining here. Similar to its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy S III is also a very capable device – in fact, even more capable than the Galaxy S II for that matter. When you come to think of it, it is getting harder to find fault on the handset as it borders on being perfect. We all know though that there is no perfect smartphone because any handset from the entry level to the ultra high-end can still be plagued by issues and bugs that will hamper its performance. And when it comes to these problems, a software update usually saves the day for the handset.

Despite being seen as a very capable device, the Samsung Galaxy S III still could use some help from software updates in making it better and more powerful than it already is. In fact, Samsung has just started rolling out the first OTA software update for its flagship device. And since the update is getting unleashed via OTA, either you wait for the notification to come up or manually check for the update to know if it can already be taken advantage of.

According to reports, the size of the update may vary depending on the initial configuration of the Samsung Galaxy S III. It could be as light as just 9MB but there are users of the handset who confirmed that the update in their case weighed in at approximately 31MB. Once the update has been applied to the handset, the software version of the Samsung Galaxy S III will be cranked up from I9300XXLEF to I9300XXLF2. In addition to that, the said software update will also bring improved stability to the devicew.

As for the Samsung Galaxy S III, the handset packs an Exynos 4212 chipset under the hood and brings into play a quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor clocked at 1.4 GHz along with a full gigabyte of RAM. The handset is available from 16GB to as much as 64GB in terms of onboard storage but a user also has the option to have the internal memory of the handset expanded by using the memory expansion slot of the Samsung Galaxy S III. Display-wise, the superphone sports a massive 4.8-inch SuperAMOLED panel with a 1280 x 720 resolution while its dual-shooter configuration is comprised of an 8MP shooter at its back panel and a 1.9MP video chat camera at its front bezel.  The Samsung Galaxy S III can be pre-ordered for $199 at select online retailers.
