nokiatabletThere has been speculation about Nokia coming out with a new tablet soon and it seems that the rumours might be true. According to the Verge, Nokia has plans of launching its new Windows RT-powered tablet early next year. Details regarding this new tablet have also been revealed and it seems like Nokia enthusiasts will definitely have something to look forward to this 2013.

The rumoured tablet comes with 10.1 inch display (the same size as the Surface RT),  a special keyboard cover with a kickstand to prop the tablet up in a similar fashion to the N810, along with its own battery that doubles as an auxiliary power source. Connectivity options include HDMI and USB ports as well as a cellular connection.

The tablet will be running the Windows RT operating system, which is an ARM based version of the Windows 8 OS. Windows RT, which is capable of utilizing more power-efficient chips used in some smartphones and tablets, is far less popular among consumers and is best recognized as the OS running the Microsoft Surface. If the device is met with any success, it could be a boosting platform for the less desired operating system.

The new tablet has a lot working against it, particularly the overwhelming competition in the tablet market. Presently, a lot of the top tablet sales seem to be leaning towards Apple’s iPad as well the diverse range of cheaper Android-running tablets from Amazon and Google. Aside from this, Nokia will need to bring something fresh to the market if it needs to leave its mark and, for the time being, consumers aren’t heavily invested in the idea of owning a Windows-powered tablet, particularly one that runs Windows RT.

In the larger scheme of things, however, the tablet marks Nokia’s most significant integration into the tablet market; a market which it has actively spent very little time with. For the longest while, Nokia has maintained its focus on the smartphone business and committed to developing its Lumia series which run the Windows Phone operating system. However, given the gradual decline in market share value that Nokia has seen in recent times, it might be best for Nokia to branch out more and explore its prospects in the tablet industry. Telecommunication carrier AT&T will reportedly be the first carrier to sell the tablet, which is expected to make its debut at the Mobile World Congress come February 2013.
