New York was the venue of choice for both Nokia and Motorola which chose to unveil new devices on Wednesday and it appears that both companies are making every effort possible to join Apple and Samsung as the dominant players in the smartphone industry. With just a week to go for the much anticipated release of the iPhone, a lot is riding on the new devices from both the companies as their shares continue to fall while Apple and Samsung are seeing continuous increases in their stock prices.

Currently, Apple and Samsung make up for around half of the global smartphone sales and the difference between the two and the next manufacturer is so large that the possibility of a third player in the industry is still quite slim. That spot would have been left for RIM but it appears that the Canadian company is not going to release Blackberry 10 devices until later next year. In addition, only Apple and Samsung are continuously shipping phones to retail outlets and service providers at a profit leaving other companies to compete in losses.

Motorola has just announced three smartphones under the Razr branding which are going to be available only on Verizon and their unique features are the speed and the 4G capabilities. Moreover, they have larger screens and will probably be in direct competition with the iPhone. These three phones are the first to come from Motorola after its acquisition by Google. The process was done in May and both companies remained quiet about future plans as they tried to revamp the entire organizational structure. Google was of the opinion that the union of both companies is going to lead to innovation in the market but it doesn’t expect Motorola to become a giant any time soon.

While Motorola has stuck with Android for its phones, Nokia has taken the route of the Windows Phone 8 and chose Microsoft as its partner. In fact, it appears that Nokia is the software giant’s best ally as it plans to maintain exclusivity with the OS. Nokia showed the Lumia 920 which features the PureView camera technology and wireless charging and also the Lumia 820, which is a mid range smartphone. Nokia seems confident about the new line of products and it will definitely be interesting to see how the phones fare in the global market when they compete with releases from Apple and Samsung.
