Delivering a new lock screen with easier instant access to your camera, phone or text message features, new Windows-like folder options, a burst shot multiple image capture camera mode and “speak to type” capabilities, the already great Droid Razr MAXX 4G just got better. The handset that appeared on January 26 on the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE system in the United States with maximum battery life just recently received the Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) 4.0 operating system upgrade, and performance enhancements as well as new features are found on almost every front.

The Motorola Droid Razr Maxx is on sale now starting at 69.99.

With the new lock screen you can now jump immediately to make calls, record video or snapshots, or shoot out a text message, and with a swipe to the right you can access the last screen you were viewing. The ability to create your own customizable folders makes for a very clean user interface, and the handset can now simultaneously record video and still images. Early Droid Razr MAXX ICS 4.0 users have reported a much livelier and seemingly quicker handset experience overall. The new ICS 4.0 Android operating system also delivers a handy “speak to type” feature, allowing you to talk instead of typing for text messages, e-mails and anywhere else the virtual keyboard is present.

The handset arrived bearing all the wonderful features of its skinnier twin, the Motorola Droid Razr 4G, but added an extended life 3,300 mA battery which provided 85% more capacity than on the wafer-thin Razr. The Razr MAXX 4G is capable of 21.5 hours of talk time or 15.0 hours of video playback from a single battery charge, and also delivers the most out-of-the-box, user accessible data storage of any smartphone at 32 GB. That is comprised of 16 GB built in and a removable 16 GB microSD card which ships with the Motorola Droid Razr Maxx 4G handset.

However, Motorola designers did a commendable job of keeping the handset skinny, as it measures 0.35 inches (8.99 mm) in thickness. YouTube and Picasa applications have been pre-installed, and the built-in music player supports all major audio file formats. The 4.30 inch Super AMOLED Advanced display delivers a screen resolution of 540 x 960 pixels, and is protected by a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass.

In the hardware package 1.0 GB of RAM system memory is on board, and a Texas Instruments OMAP 4430 microchip package is centered around the dual core 1.2 GHz Cortex A9 central processor. The graphics processor on board is a PowerVR SGX540 model, and video out is provided by either the built-in microHDMI port or wirelessly through DLNA connectivity. The 8.0 megapixel camcorder on the back of the handset provides video capture at 1,080P HD resolution.

  1. A little late to the party? I’ve had ICS on my Razr Maxx for a few months now (from Motorola, not a ROM)

  2. Many users are reporting much WORSE battery life since the ICS update was installed in July. My battery life is now similar to my old phone with a battery half the size. Verizon and Motorola really need to fix this, otherwise the biggest selling point of this phone is no advantage vs. Anything else on the market.

    Frustrated RAZR MAXX User

  3. What the hell is going on with Verion & Moto? I called Verizon and they said there is not going to be a bug fix for ICS. They are going to JUMP right into Jelly Bean and bypass the bug fix all together for ICS. They DO NOT KNOW when we all will be getting Jelly Bean however. Isn’t that nice to hear????? i used to LOVE my MAXX B4 the update. Perhaps I should inform Verizon that I DO NOT KNOW WHEN I CAN SEND IN MY PAYMENT. BAD SERVICE EQUALS NO FUC*%^*^%ING PAYMENT. RIGHT?????? 3 MONTHS OF THIS CRAP. I DON’T KNOW WHO IS WORSE, MOTO OR VERIZON. YOU DECEIDE…

  4. Vicki — I agree COMPLETELY. From Jan 26 to June 29th I loved my MAXX and told everyone who would listen what a great phone it was. On June 30 the ICS update trashed the battery life and several important features that I used every day, and had made sure worked correctly before I kept the phone during the original return period. Now it has been broken for over 3 months, I’ve spent MANY hours with Verizon and Moto tech support, and no fix. I was also recently told by Moto that there would be no ICS fix, but it would go straight to JB. No clue about when, though. If this thing was a car, they would be forced to buy it back under the “lemon law” — time for similar legislation for phones! I’m seriously considering suing my local Verizon store, where I bought the phone, in small claims court. No discount, no comps of any kind, just keep paying full price for this @#$@#$ crippled phone. This was my first Moto phone, and I can’t think of a single reason to consider another one. Too bad, the hardware was nice. Customer support SUCKS!!!
