lgoptimusgproSmartphone manufacturers have wisely been embracing social networks since the arrival of MySpace oh so many years ago. While MySpace is no longer the runaway leader in the social networking market it was when it arrived, still tens of millions of users log onto the social portal. But we all know that Facebook is the King of social networking today, and consumer electronics manufacturer LG recently used Facebook to reach hundreds of millions to tease about their upcoming smartphone lineup.

On the official LG Facebook page, LG posted an image designed to get users to “like” their page in order to get a glimpse at the upcoming smartphones for 2013. The teaser promises only that the LG “New (smartphone) series will be unveiled.” A picture of a wrapped gift box accompanies the tagline which reads, “See what surprise LG has in store for you this time, with an unexpected distinction.” If that doesn’t play to the age-old marketing ploy of using curiosity to pique interest, then nothing does.

While LG does not want to stipulate which phones they will be unveiling and when, word on the street is that the company is going to make a big showing at Mobile World Congress (MWC) this year in Barcelona, Spain. Launching the new teaser on Facebook this week with the MWC set for the last week in February would be the perfect setup for a reveal of the upcoming LG Optimus G Pro.

That upcoming smartphone for LG is rumored to deliver a 5.0 inch display with startling 441 ppi pixel density. A Full HD-IPS + LCD capacitive touchscreen with 1,080 x 1,920 pixels, the Jelly Bean 4.1 or possibly Key Lime 4.2 Android operating system and quad core CPU are also thought to be on board, with a rumored retail price of around $199 on contract. Until then it is speculation of course, but the LG Optimus G running on the new 4G LTE network of Sprint has been a runaway hit for that wireless provider, and currently carries a bargain retail price of $49 on contract at the Amazon Wireless store.

Delivering a slim profile of 0.33 inches (8.45 mm), the LG Optimus G delivers a large 4.70 inch True HD IPS+ Touch Hybrid Display with 1,280 x 768 pixel resolution. Pixel density runs high at 318 pixels per inch, but more than 16 million colors present on that display. The quad core CPU on board the LG Optimus G has been clocked at 1.5 GHz, a full 2.0 GB of RAM system memory has been installed, as has a full 32 GB of onboard storage space.
