lgoptimusgThe LG Optimus G is a 4G Android smartphone running on the Sprint 4G LTE system in the United States. Only available in the US since November 11, the handset has already passed the 1 million units sold mark globally. An important distinction for any smartphone, it is especially notable for the Optimus G since the handset has not been available in the tech hungry United States smartphone marketplace for very long.

LG recently announced that they would be rolling out the Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean operating system upgrade to the Optimus G 4G, but as smartphone manufacturers love to do, they did not mention a particular schedule, or when US customers could expect the update. However, the good news is that the operating system upgrade has begun in South Korea, a familiar pattern which usually sees Asia receive updates before the United States.

Jelly Bean 4.1.2 is more than just a slight tweak in the Android OS lineup. It offers significant improvements and features, such as Project Butter, which dramatically improves the speed and smoothness experienced when using this operating system. Another significant enhancement is the upgrade to the Google Now contextual search and virtual personal assistant. Camera operation is also improved, and the Android home screens provide less clutter.

In the United States the LG Optimus G has been a best seller for the Sprint 4G LTE network, delivering a large high-resolution display, powerful quad core central processor, battery boosting Power Saver and Eco Mode features and one of the highest megapixel counts for any 4G smartphone camera. The LG Optimus G also delivers a QuickMemo application that allows you to use the handset’s display to jot, sketch and doodle with the aid of a stylus.

Slim at 0.33 inches (8.45 mm), the handset delivers a large 4.70 inch True HD IPS+ Touch Hybrid Display with 1,280 x 768 pixel resolution (WXGA quality). Pixel density runs high at 318 pixels per inch, more than 16 million colors are found on that display, and a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass offers scratch resistance. Talk time runs up to a generous 13.0 hours from a single battery charge, and the handset is powered by a quad core 1.5 GHz Snapdragon processor. 32 GB of storage has been included, as has 2.0 GB of RAM memory. The 13.0 megapixel camcorder on the handset offers video capture at 1,080P HD resolution, and the front facing chat cam delivers video call support.
