Apple has for long been keeping most of its devoted customers on the edge of their seats, in high anticipation of the new iPhone 5. Most of the thoughts that would running through their heads would include the wild rumours found in excess all over the internet, some dealing with revolutionary design, some talking about holographic projections, and other assorted features.

In those cases, most users would look at their old piece of hardware and wonder, now what?

According to a survey by a popular internet magazine, the iPhone does very well on resale when compared to its competitors Android and Blackberry. The iPhone most recently topped a survey on the resale value of old phones, with a stunning 53%. When readers an online magazine were interviewed about what they’d do with their old iPhones, 31% said they’d sell their iPhone to buy a new tech toy recently released on the market and 25% said they would pass on the outdated iPhone to a family member.

These results stand testimony to the fact that the iPhone is still pretty widely regarded even when its second hand. Its resale value is around 53% around 18 months after purchase, beating its competitors Android by 11% and Blackberry by over 12%, according to a report by Pricenomics.

These numbers reflect that the total cost of ownership of the iPhone may not be as high as a lot of people think. According to the report, this means that the iPhone costs only $13.20 per month as opposed to Android handsets which cost 40% more.
Most handsets tend to lose value within the first few months after purchase, and taper off even further with time. So it seems most users have the option of circulating that iPhone within the family, or getting some of that hard earned cash back by selling, which mostly cannot be done with your Android or Blackberry device.
