Whenever Apple releases a new generation of its iPhone, the Cupertino-based company seems to always downplay the details of its internals especially with regard to its processor and RAM. Nothing is different when the iPhone 5 was unveiled a couple of days ago. Although it was announced that the new iPhone has a CPU that is two times faster than what the iPhone 4S had and its GPU doubles the performance of its predecessor, they did not go into the specifics. Again.
However, it looks like results of a Geekbench benchmark test that the new iPhone 5 looks to prove the claims made by Apple during the handset’s unveiling. Apparently, the sixth generation iPhone managed to to achieve a Geekbench benchmark score of 1601, the highest ever achieved by an iOS device. In fact, word on the street is that no other iOS device released in the past managed to go beyond the 800 threshold and this 1601 score of the iPhone 5 seems to prove Apple’s point.
What is interesting though is that the iPhone 5 sneaked by the Google Nexus 7 and Samsung Galaxy S III which are also two of the higher-performing Android-powered devices in the market today. The iPhone 5’s 1601 score narrowly edges out the Google Nexus 7’s 1590 and the Samsung Galaxy S III’s 1560. It should however be noted that the variant of the Galaxy S III used in the benchmark test only had Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich for its operating system. However, putting a Jelly Bean-packing Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III through the same test will net it a score of 1781 which is more than enough to blow the iPhone 5’ 1601 score out of the water. And with Jelly Bean expected to land on the Samsung flagship device this October if rumors pan out, Apple’s league-leading Geekbench score will only stay at the top for so long.
In addition to that, it should be noted that the Jelly Bean-packing Samsung Galaxy Note II which happens to have even more impressive components that the Galaxy S III was not included in the benchmark. Had it been included, the test results would have been different and Apple would have resulted to downplaying its need for top of the line components in its devices yet again.
As for the Samsung Galaxy S III, the handset remains to be the strongest competitor of the iPhone once Apple’s new baby hits the shelves. The version of the handset that made it to US shelves packs a QualComm MSM8960 SnapDragon chipset under the hood with a dual-core 1.5 GHz Krait processor and 2GB of RAM in tow. The handset is available in a 16GB and 32GB model in terms of storage capacity with the option of expanding its memory made possible by the device’s dedicated memory expansion slot. Its display is a massive 4.8-inch SuperAMOLED HD panel with a 1280 x 720 resolution while its camera department features a rear-facing 8MP shooter and a front-facing 1.9MP snapper.

It should be noted that the Galaxy S III results are from the International Model, not the US model as is suggested in this article. The US Galaxy S III benchmarks much lower, with or without Jelly Bean.

I can’t believe that sites are still posting that FAKE Galaxy S3 geekbench score from “Macrumors” of 1560.
It would have been very easy for you to check that a Galaxy S3 will easily score in the 1700+ -1900+ range. And that’s on Ice Cream sandwich. Not Jellybean.
