The new generation of iPhones by Apple is expected to have larger screens, according to sources. Apple is already placing orders with their suppliers in Japan and South Korea. Consumers are increasingly turning to their smartphones for many thing that they used to rely on their laptops for, and therefore manufacturers are looking at offering larger displays for more utility.

Ever since the iPhone was introduced in 2007, the iPhone screen has always measured 3.5 inches. However, the new screens may measure up to 4 inches from one corner to another. This indicates an increase in the viewing area by 30 percent, if all other dimensions are kept proportional. The production of these new screens has already begun at Apple’s suppliers which involves three companies. Apple may send out production orders for these new screens to all three suppliers by June this year. Production of the new iPhone may start by August. However, no confirmed comment was given out by Apple on this matter. Reports on Wall Street Journal had earlier suggested the possibility of Apple introducing larger displays.

Apple’s move may help them give competition to Samsung’s Galaxy Note, which is by far the largest Android phone. Samsung also recently introduced their new line of Galaxy smartphones with a screen measuring 4.8 inches and equipped with a blazing fast processor. Samsung has outshined Nokia as the largest maker of handsets in the market as they were successful at selling 45 million smartphones this year. The sales of Samsung’s Galaxy have beaten the sales of the iPhone as well.

Analysts agree that introduction of an iPhone with a larger screen will certainly help boost Apple’s fan base, with more people willing to change their old iPhones for new, better and larger ones. Consumers are also looking for designs that are worthy of what they pay for, apart from having advanced features in their phones. This change could work well for Apple since they haven’t introduced any changes in the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S which have been launched in the last two years.

The revenue earned from the sales of the iPhone comprise of about one half of the total sales at Apple, making the iPhone division an important source of growth for the company. Going by reports in a South Korean newspaper, Apple will use and retain the Retina display in their next generation of iPhones to enhance the quality of images like in the latest iPad.
