The HTC Evo 4G recently improved performance in many areas via an over the air update. Over the air updates are efficient ways for carriers and handset makers to upgrade the performance of their products without disrupting service to their customers. This HTC 4G smartphone actually had minor bugs in several areas which aroused the ire of some customers, so HTC is addressing those complaints, and while not only fixing them, is also improving the performance in those areas. Let’s take a look at exactly what is delivered in this exciting update, and how to check to see if your handset has received it already.

Voice recognition was one area in which customers felt they were not getting the best possible performance. Voice recognition accuracy has been updated and improved with this staggered, over the air software upgrade. Now, when using voice recognition software  on the HTC Evo 4G such as Google voice search, and when giving voice commands, the past performance issues are just that, a thing of the past. Also, some users claimed that when importing their contacts over Bluetooth connectivity from another device, there was an image resizing issue. Evidently, the software was not reading the image size correctly on the contact transfer, and that has been corrected as well.

Picasa is a very popular Google application, and images were sometimes being trimmed and cut off when using this app. This is also corrected with this over the air update, as well as “out of memory” error messages and “unable to send” SMS problems. Also, group contacts were sometimes not being displayed in alphabetical order, which could be quite a nuisance as you can imagine. This too has been corrected with this upgrade.

So, you want to know whether your handset has been upgraded or not? Simply go to the Settings option on your handset. Under Settings, go to the About Phone section. If your Evo 4G Android smartphone has been updated already, you will notice version 4.53.651.1. If not, check back in a couple of days.

The HTC Evo 4G was the first phone to arrive on the Sprint 4G network, and is currently priced at $19 with a two-year activation. Sprint has been very aggressive with pricing of their first generation 4G handsets, and the HTC Evo 4G offers a 4.3 inch screen, dual cameras, HTC Sense user interface Android overlay and 720p high definition recording ability.  Find out more about the technical specifications and features of this HTC smartphone with the HTC Evo 4G Review.

  1. I have had the UI restart issues since the series of updates started. I think having to reset your phone before and after an update in unacceptable. If you had to format your hard drive to update Windows (wait I did have to) I would quit using it (wait, I did quit using it). With the latest update, the voice recognition did start to work again but now my SWYPE is all goofy (that is a technical term). Sometimes and in some apps it gets locked in the numerical screen and in some the alpha screen and in some it changes but not graphically. Meaning, you see a numbers and symbols but get letters when you type. It was a bit of a discovery when I realized that I was familiar enough with the screen to type even though the letters where not visible. That is a skill one should not need to operate your phone. Every update I have had since I got my phone Dec 2010 seems to have brought more bad than good. This last one (Android 2.3.3) seems to have brought with it the fewest amount of new issues. It did fix the voice recognition which was critical to me. The keyboard issue is extremely impactful since that is the interface I utilize the most. So even though it seems to have brought a smaller number is issues, it did bring one of the most negative; equal only to the constant crashing and restarting of the UI. I am not a happy camper at the moment to say the least.

  2. HTC should also address the issue of the constant reloading of the main menu. For instance if I using the internet browser and desire to return to my home menu, the phone will immediately reload the home screen. I find this very annoying above other bugs! That’s why I have decided to never buy an HTC phone again since this company releases update with bugs unlike other popular brands.
