htcdroiddnaThe HTC Droid DNA is a Jelly Bean powered smartphone that runs on the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE system in the US. The sleek handset offers a powerful quad core processor, double the average smartphone RAM memory, exclusive Beats Audio sound enhancement and high resolution video capture. And the flagship Verizon device recently benefited from the announcement of its successor.

HTC executives earlier this week announced the HTC Droid DNA follow-up will be named the Butterfly, and will launch in the fourth quarter of this year. While that arrival is still quite a way off in the future, Amazon dropped the retail price of the HTC Droid DNA 4G Android smartphone to $49 on contract. The handset delivers full range Beats Audio sound through its dedicated speaker amps and 2.5 volt headset amplifier.

The handset is designed in the typical slim, rectangular smartphone form factor, but is slim, light and tough. Handset dimensions run 5.55 x 2.78 x 0.38 inches (141 x 70.5 x 9.73 mm), and the Droid DNA weighs 4.87 ounces (138 g). Those numbers make it thinner and lighter than the typical 4G smartphone with the same size display. The display in question is a 5.0 inch ImageChip ISP S-LCD 3 model, delivering 1,080 x 1,920 pixels and 16 million separate colors.

Pixel density runs extremely high at 441 pixels per inch, a designation which improves on the 306 ppi offered by the Samsung Galaxy S III and the 326 ppi delivered by the Apple iPhone 5. That display is protected against normal wear and tear by a scratch resistant layer of Gorilla Glass, and contains built-in light and proximity sensors which help improved battery performance. The Droid DNA 4G contains a 2,020 mA battery which offers a full 14.6 days of standby power and 12.6 hours of talk time from a full battery charge.

A Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 system chip is at the cornerstone of the handset’s hardware package, and is centered around a quad core 1.5 GHz CPU. The GPU is an Adreno 320 model, a full 16 GB of data storage space is on board, as is 2.0 GB of RAM. The rear facing 8.0 megapixel camcorder provides such features as continuous shooting for up to four shots per second, and the HTC VideoPic feature which captures high-quality snapshots while simultaneously shooting HD video. Extensive features and a special effects package is also on board, and video capture runs 1,080P HD resolution.
