nexus6The Nexus branded smartphones have come a long way, but for the most part, the idea is the same.  For Google, they want to provide a high end smartphone, unlocked and packed full of the best specs that the market can offer.  The Nexus 4 smartphone is where things really started to get good for consumers that were interested in getting a top of the line Android powered device from the Google Play Store and take it to any mobile carrier with coverage in their area.  One of the bad things about the 4th generation Nexus smartphone was that it did not have 4G LTE support.

That all changed with the Nexus 5 and now it looks like some of the details surrounding the Nexus 6 have been leaked thanks to Google.  It is not typical for the company making the smartphone to leak information about a smartphone that has yet to be announced, but Google is not typical.  At the Mobile World Congress event this week, the head of Android Sundar Pichai, took questions from the crowd about Android and the Nexus 6.  The sixth generation of the smartphone is going to be released this year and Pichai even narrowed down a time frame if you are interested.

The Nexus 5 was announced on Halloween last year and it would make since that Google would release the next generation smartphone around the same time as the Nexus branded phone typically has a one year life cycle.  Pichai might not have revealed the exact details that you want to hear about the smartphone, like processor type or display size, but he did say that the phone will “not be released in the first half of this year”.  Historically, most of the consumers could have figured that out, but at least they heard it from a Google employee this time around.

Most of the time, smartphone makers are making sure they have a new smartphone on the market before the busy holiday shopping time of the year and Google does just that.  Google holds an I/O conference each year and that it usually where they reveal any new version of Android and new devices at the same time.  That event comes up in the second half of the year.  The odds are good that the Nexus 6 will have a larger display, faster processor and better camera than the Nexus 5 if that is possible.
