You can get your apps from a couple of branded app stores like Apple iTunes App Store and the Android Market; you can also download apps from independent mobile app stores like GetJar.com.  GetJar.com announced today they passed the 2 billion download mark last week and are really growing on the Android side of downloadable apps.  To celebrate, the app store said they will start offering up free apps and have had an Android client developed which allows a customer to download apps right from their phone.  However, some are saying the Android client could get the company into hot water with Google.

GetJar.com is gaining steam against rivals like Apple, Amazon and Google, but recently they have lost of their key strategists who left the company to work for Google.  The chief marketing officer, Patrick Mork was also a key spokesperson for GetJar.com when it came to talking about their competition.  The whole idea behind free apps is typical marketing for getting more customers “through the doors”, but like other companies like Amazon, they do not pay the developers with the “Free App of the Day” program.  There is no confirmation that Getjar.com will do the same, but a new program called GetJar Gold was introduced.

With GetJar Gold a user has access to premium paid apps for free while they are a member.  Patrick Mork said they try and work on long term relationships with their developers and that includes all the promotions that might go into play with their apps.  Other app stores have tried the tactic, but developers are not that excited to get no money when the promotions end.  Developers do get some exposure, but that is also not guaranteed by anyone.

The client that GetJar has developed is geared towards Android and getting those apps downloaded right to your phone.  The Android client can be downloaded from the web version of the Android Market and once it is installed on your phone you will be able to download other apps right to your phone.  There has been a lot of talk of non-compete clauses in the mobile world and have apps like Kongergate Arcade and Visual VoiceMail from getting anywhere fast.  The Android client was not developed by GetJar, but a third party on their behalf.  As of this article the GetJar Android client was reported as not at 100 percent working capacity.
