The much-anticipated and highly lauded Samsung Galaxy  S III smartphone arrived in the United States on the AT&T 4G LTE network on June 22, and is currently offered in a Pebble Blue, Marble White or Garnet Red colored chassis. The handset delivers Android’s 4.0.4 operating system out-of-the-box with Near Field Communications (NFC) capabilities and the TouchWiz UX UI Android overlay. Measuring 5.38 x 2.78 x 0.34 inches (136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6 mm) and weighing 4.73 ounces (134 g), the AT&T Galaxy  S III is light and slim in spite of all the impressive software and hardware on board.

Google and AT&T recently announced that the new Android operating system, Jelly Bean 4.1, would be hitting the Galaxy S III in an over the air transfer. Neither company would give a specific launch date for Jelly Bean 4.1 on the GS III, only stating that all devices in the US would have completed receiving the transfer by the end of the third quarter, September 30.

The 4.80 inch Super AMOLED touch screen display delivers a pixel density of 306 pixels per inch for an overall screen resolution of 720 x 1,280 pixels. Visuals are displayed in more than 16 million separate colors, and standard capacitive, multitouch gestures are used for device navigation. The light and proximity sensors built in provide auto brightness adjustment taking into account the amount of ambient light present, and battery conservation by powering down the display when a voice call is made. That display is protected by a second generation layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 2.

Talk time on the Samsung Galaxy S III runs to the industry average of 8.00 hours from a single charge of the 2,100 mA battery on board, and the hardware package centers around a dual core 1.5 GHz central processor. A separate Adreno 225 chip handles all graphics processing and is part of a Qualcomm MSM8960 Snapdragon microchip package. Delivering the most out-of-the-box RAM system memory at 2.0 GB, the handset also offers 16 GB of built-in storage, with microSDHC and microSDXC support for cards up to 64 GB in size delivered through the built-in microSD slot.

The rear facing 8.0 megapixel camera delivers a Burst Shot mode which captures rapid-fire images at three shots per second, and the handset delivers simultaneous HD video and image capture. Video is recorded in 1,080P HD and 30 frames per second, and a VGA quality chat cam is located up front. The Galaxy S III handset also contains a YouTube video player, and the built-in music player comes with both custom and preset equalizers. Popular online destinations Facebook, Picasa and Twitter join YouTube as preinstalls ready for use out-of-the-box.  View the recently reduced Galaxy S III price tag at select online retailers.
