Apple releases the iPhone 4S

It’s finally official, Apple has taken the curtains off its latest much talked about flagship handset, the iPhone 4S. Even as most of industry and Apple enthusiasts were confused as to what kind of phone the company would actually release in the hugely anticipated media event held yesterday, most of them expected Apple to release the 4S.

The new Apple phone will run on an A5 processor, which is also featured on the iPad 2 tablet and will be almost two times faster than the previous iPhone model apart from providing a performance which is almost seven times better in terms of graphics related tasks. Even as the phone now has a better more powerful processor, Apple announced that its battery will now last longer, providing up to eight hours of talk time on 3G.

Apple also announced a new and innovative dual antenna system for the 4S according to which the phone will have two antennas which it will switch between according to the signal strength in order to provide better call quality. The phone supports HSPA+ 14.4 which enables it to access the internet twice as fast as before. Apart from these, Apple said that the new iPhone is a world phone (CDMA as well as GSM), like Research In Motion’s BlackBerry smartphones, and can function on multiple networks and carriers across the globe.

The 4S also features an upgrade to an 8 megapixel camera which offers a pixel count almost 60% more than the iPhone 4. The camera is coupled with a CMOS illuminated backside sensor which is said to be able to take in 73% more light than the sensor in the previous iPhone. Along with a face detection feature and the ability to take photos much faster than most other smartphones, the 4S also shoots 1080p videos with real time image stabilization.

Apple went further to introduce the AirPlay mirroring feature for the first time on the iPhone, which will enable it to direct its display to other screens wirelessly. Another feature which finds its way on the new iOS 5 is Siri, which works as a personal assistant for your iDevice through voice detection. The phone is expected to launch on the 14th of October in both black and white variants. It will come in three models featuring 16GB, 32GB and 64GB of storage capacity for $199, $299 and $399 respectively.
