bbvsapplesamsungThere is quite a lot of excitement in the market for the launch of BlackBerry’s new devices in the United States. This launch will be quite significant for BlackBerry as it fights with Microsoft’s Windows Phone ecosystem for third position in the global smartphone OS scene. Data from Prosper Insights and Analytics suggests that customer excitement regarding the imminent launch surpasses Samsung’s and Apple’s existing flagships.

The ‘Excitement Scores’, which are essentially indicators of the desire for a product relative to its market share, show that the excitement among BlackBerry’s loyal user base towards the arrival of the new BlackBerry 10 operating system powered devices are almost 70 percent higher than that for Samsung’s Galaxy S III. Yet another interesting fact is that the excitement surrounding Apple’s iPhone is the lowest despite its considerably large market share. The data showed that iPhone showed over a 90 percent lower excitement than its competitor from Samsung.

Thorsten Heins, CEO of BlackBerry, continues to be optimistic about the sales of BlackBerry 10 powered smartphones, despite being faced with heavy competition from Windows Phone 8 devices from Nokia, HTC and Huawei. He believes that the preliminary sales reports from the United Kingdom and Canada show significant promise. This high excitement score may very well be an indicator of this fact.

Despite being in third position, BlackBerry is quite far off from leaders Android and iOS in terms of market share. Samsung’s Galaxy S III and Apple’s iPhone 5 have quite a high ‘hot’ factor in the market – nearly 60 percent and 55 percent respectively. Only around 30 percent find the devices running BlackBerry 10 to be ‘hot’. But when viewed relative to the market share of the OS, an entirely different picture is painted. Relative to its large customer base, there is not much excitement about the iPhone 5 or its likely successors. This, of course, is similar to comparing growth in countries with differing economy sizes. Countries with a large economy would show a lower rate of growth compared to countries with a smaller economy, even though the growth in actual terms of the larger economy would be greater.

While encouraging, these numbers only show that among the small number of Blackberry users excitement for the new BB10 OS is high, though this does not in any way imply that similar interest exists among users of other platforms.

  1. I switched from an iphone 4s to a blackberry z10 and the hype is worth it. I was tired of the fact that my 4s didn’t do much more than my 3Gs and the iphone 5 again didn’t look much better. I wanted something new and the z10 is that. It just works so nice and the gestures are fun to use. The message HUB is amazing and the keyboard is hands down the best I have ever used. Most of my apple buddies won’t be switching because they love their iphones to much but anyone who gives Blackberry 10 a chance will probably be very happy they did.

  2. I second Jamies comment. I am through and through thrilled with my Z10,
My children now have a Z10 and my wife wants the Q10.
