The second mobile handset to deliver glasses free 3-D viewing, the LG Thrill 4G, recently obtained a retail price drop to $19.99 with a two-year activation on AT&T’s 4G network. While being the first to introduce any technology certainly has its obvious benefits, in this case, being second to market with a glasses free 3-D smartphone has its benefits as well. AT&T was able to ensure that they undercut the price of the HTC Evo 3-D, the first handset ever to offer glasses free 3-D viewing, and that’s exactly what they did. And to promote the release of their handset, LG and AT&T joined video game developer Gameloft and teamed up to offer $10,000 in prizes to be awarded to the best players in a free to enter 3-D tournament run nationwide in the US using the LG Thrill 4G handset.

LG and Gameloft are calling the marketing campaign/3-D tournament’s first stop to be held September 20 at the Hollywood and Highland Center Rolling Stone LA Lounge “Bring Your World Alive”. And the players that advance through to the finals will claim the $10,000 in prizes. Both amateurs and professionals alike are allowed to enter, and you need not own an LG Thrill 4G handset to play. They will be provided. The game used in the 3-D tournament will be the Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance (N.O.V.A.) 3D video game, made by no other than Gameloft. With the LG Thrill going for as low as $19.99, we expect to see quite a few of these units hitting users hands.

As well as offering the glasses free ability to view 3-D content, the LG Thrill 4G 3-D Android handset also allows for recording 3-D in 720P high definition at 24 frames per second. Duel rear facing 5 megapixel cameras record simultaneous content in two dimensions, and then pass that information to the 3-D processor, which then relays the image or video to the 4.3 inch capacitive touchscreen in three dimensions. Recording in two dimensions is also possible in 1080P high definition. The LG Thrill 4G uses a Texas Instruments dual core 1.0 GHz OMAP4 processor, and comes with Froyo 2.2 out-of-the-box. The handset comes preloaded with 3-D games Let’s Golf 2 and N.O.V.A. 3-D.
