Boost Mobile has announced that it is boosting its lineup of Android-powered smartphones with the addition of the HTC EVO Design 4G to its stable as its first WiMax handset. The handset first became widespread when it was offered by Sprint last November and now, Boost Mobile is taking advantage of the seeming popularity of the handset from Taiwanese smartphone and tablet manufacturer HTC.

During the announcement, Boost Mobile confirmed that the HTC EVO Design 4G will hit the shelves of the brick and mortar stores of the wireless provider starting May 31 and can be had for $299. In addition to that, the carrier announced that the handset will be offered in conjunction with its Android Monthly Unlimited Plan which can be taken advantage of for only $55 per month. Not only that, the monthly payments for the said plan can go down to as low as $40 per month as long as payments are made on time.

Though Boost Mobile’s version of the HTC EVO Design 4G is a veritable dead-ringer to the variant of the device released by Sprint, the Boost Mobile HTC EVO Design 4G has some marked differences from Sprint’s version. The most important and glaring difference is that the version of the handset that will be released by the wireless provider on May 31 will already have Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich for its default operating system. This leads us to think that the HTC EVO Design 4G of Sprint is about to get the ICS refresh anytime soon for that matter.

Not only that, Boost Mobile’s version of the handset is being offered as a no-contract device and will take advantage of the 3G and 4G WiMax networks of Sprint so customers of the Boost Mobile in 71 markets across US shores will also get a taste of fast mobile browsing speeds that range from 3 to 6 Mbps which can even reach bursts of up to 10 Mbps. On the other hand, Sprint’s version of the device can still be had for only a penny at an online retailer for only a penny but interested buyers will be required to sign a new two-year agreement with the wireless provider to take advantage of the handset’s penny price point.

As for Boost Mobile’s version of the HTC EVO Design 4G, the handset will still have the same hardware DNA as that of Sprint’s and will have a QualComm MSM8655 SnapDragon chipset under the hood. Its processor is a 1.2 GHz single-core Scorpion CPU while its system memory is pegged at 768 MB of RAM. The storage space of the handset comes up to 2GB but this is still expandable and the retail package of the handset already comes with a 2GB microSD card for memory expansion purposes. The display of the HTC EVO Design 4G is a 4.0-inch LCD capacitive multitouch panel with a qHD resolution of 540 x 960 pixels while its camera department outfits the handset with a 5MP rear shooter and a 1.3MP front-facer.
