Back in the day, Nokia was at the forefront of things in the smartphone competition due to the popularity of its E-Series line of smartphones. However, things didn’t turn out too well for the Finnish manufacturer when other OEMs such as Apple, Samsung, HTC, Motorola and the like entered the smartphone competition. With this development, Nokia was relegated to the backseat of things and had to be content as a mere spectator while the other OEMs had all the fun and all the profits in the market.

Nokia however still had plans of regaining its lost glory and it started its bid by entering into a strategic alliance with software giant Microsoft and started manufacturing smartphones for the Windows Phone ecosystem. Nokia the launched the Nokia Lumia 710 and Lumia 800 in an effort to become relevant again the smartphone competition but the biggest break for the manufacturer came with the release of the Nokia Lumia 900 4G back in April of 2012.

The Nokia Lumia 900 4G was released on a Sunday which by the way also fell on a National Holiday but this did not stop the handset from claiming the top and third spots in the bestsellers list of an online retailer on its first day in the shelves. This was a testament to the popularity of the Nokia Lumia 900 4G back then.

However, the heydays of the Nokia Lumia 900 4G are long gone because its successor, the Nokia Lumia 920, has already made its back November. The Nokia Lumia 900 4G is already headed to retirement but the handset just doesn’t want to fade gently into the night. In fact, with its aging status, the Nokia Lumia 900 4G is again a recipient of another update that is meant to give it a new lease on life.

As it stands, the Windows Phone 7.8 update has been confirmed to land on the Nokia Lumia 900 4G come January 30 and bring a slew of goodies and treats to the handset. These improvements include:

  • New Start Screen
  • New theme colors
  • Bing “Image of the Day” Lock Screen Option
  • Improved Lock Screen accidental wipe protection
  • Quality and Security Enhancements
  • Marketplace Enhancements
  • API Enhancements

Despite its aging status, the Nokia Lumia 900 4G is still an impressive piece of technology. It has QualComm APQ8055 SnapDragon chipset under its hood that brings into play a 1.4 GHz Scorpion processor and 512 of RAM. The storage space onboard the device on the other hand is pegged at 16GB but this is all you get because the handset doesn’t support memory expansion. Its display is a 4.3-inch AMOLED panel with a 480 x 800 resolution while its dual-shooter configuration includes a rear 8MP shooter and a front 1.3MP video call and self-portrait snapper.
