AT&T has finally confirmed that a Gingerbread update will be released for the Samsung Infuse 4G as well as their entire Android smartphone lineup, and those Froyo 2.2 to Gingerbread 2.3.4 updates will take place over the air beginning mid October. The Infuse  4G Android handset is the thinnest and largest handset that Samsung had ever designed until they recently released their Epic Touch 4G handset. The screen on the Samsung  Infuse  4G is a whopping 4.5 inches, and is narrowly overcome by the 4.52 inch screen on the Epic Touch  4G.

That 4.5 inch screen on the Samsung  Infuse  4G Android smartphone represents one of the first instances of Samsung’s Super AMOLED Plus display technology, and has a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels. The Infuse 4G supports 16 million colors on their display screen, and that screen does allow for a capacitive multitouch navigation. Typical light and proximity sensors are also built into the display.

As far as the physical form, Samsung decided to employ the same rectangular, black slab appearance, and the four familiar Android menu buttons are located beneath the display screen. The Samsung Infuse 4G is average in size and weight, coming in at 5.20 x 2.80 x 0.35 inches (132 x 71 x 9 mm) and 4.90 ounces (139 g). When the Samsung Infuse 4G was released earlier this year, it carried about the average talk time for most 4G smartphones, at 8 hours. While that has not changed, improvements in technology have, and the 4G average is now 11 hours. However, the update which accompanies the Gingerbread operating system upgrade also adds battery life.

A single core Hummingbird 1.2 GHz processing chip set accompanies 512 MB of RAM memory in the Infuse 4G, and as mentioned earlier, Android’s Froyo 2.2 operating system is preprogrammed out-of-the-box. The camera set on the Infuse 4G is comprised of a front facing 1.3 megapixel video chat cam that also provides support for video calls, and a rear facing 8 megapixel camcorder which records at up to 30 frames per second in 720P HD. Digital zoom, special effects, a self timer and other customizable features are also on board.  Buy the Samsung Infuse 4G phone starting at only $69.99.

MicroSD and microUSB slots are also present, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi wireless connectivity options are on board, and video mirroring is available through HDMI wired and DLNA wireless technology. The Samsung Infuse 4G is exclusive to the AT&T 4G network, and is available at select AT&T authorized retailers starting at only $69.99 with a two-year activation.  The price at AT&T is still $99.  Learn more about this multimedia focused smartphone’s features, specs, and where you can get your hands on it at a reduced price in our detailed Samsung Infuse 4G Review.

  1. I was eligible for an upgrade and the Infuse was free online with a qualifying voice and data plan (which I have). I like buying my phones in store so I printed the internet pricing and took it to an AT&T store where they matched the free price. I switched from an iPhone because I hate syncing with iTunes. I love the phone and Android and cant wait for Gingerbread.

  2. how did you get that deal?

  3. The reduced pricing is not at ATT, but rather is at one of their authorized retailers. You can click on any of the links to access the information on how to find out information about that deal.

  4. Can you provide a link to where AT&T confirmed this?

Feels like false linkbait without it.

    Thanks.

  5. Dalton,

Here is the original announcement: http://www.att.com/gen/press-room?pid=20407&cdvn=news&newsarticleid=32234&mapcode=mobile-devices, The Infuse is listed as a phone that is going to get the update. Several phones on the list already have received the Gingerbread upgrade, so the process has begun. At the time Emily posted this story, a specific date for the infuse to receive the update had not been given. I myself have the LG Thrill and will be getting the update on my phone via OTA upgrade any day.

  6. I’ve seen / heard about this upgrade to Gingerbread since July (see Sarah’s link); I have the Samsung Infuse 4G and have been waiting and waiting…

Where did this “mid October” language come from? It is not in the presser linked above. I’m almost ready to root and do it myself, come on AT&T! I need to try other ROMs in hopes that the internal WiFi antenna will actually work better (it really sucks with FroYo… or it might be hardware).

  7. Agree with Roy and Sarah, been waiting and waiting, is there a confirmation somewhere online for the update? I called AT&T and they would not say when or if, they said to ask Samsung. I love the Infuse so far and the only downside has been the battery life so I am eagerly anticipating the GB update.

  8. I called at&t and they said they don’t know ab this update for infuse coming up soon. Is this official?

  9. Well, it’s now NOVEMBER, and no update…

Rumors are that both AT&T and Samsung couldn’t give a rat’s ass about support post-sale. Just push out the next model and maybe everyone who bought the last model won’t notice a complete abandonment.
